Is this a lame/innapropriate gift?

I'm pretty close to my nurse/midwife who delivered Ryan. She's taken great care of me before and after I had him. She does an amazing job of 'mothering the mother' and every time we see each other we share a great big hug. We're really friendly but still professional.

She loves her job and works really hard and she works a lot. Her birthday is Saturday and she is taking some well deserved days off. I wanted to get her something but what I thought she might appreciate more is any extra time at home w/her family to relax. I made a big thing of green chili chicken enchaladas and I'm thinking about getting a $10 gift card to blockbuster and putting it with a box of microwave popcorn. I might put something in her card telling her just that, that I hope this gives her a little more time to relax at home w/her family.

Now that the enchaladas are all made and ready to go I'm rethinking it. Is this lame or innapropriate for a patient to do this?  I'm not a cook at all but these are so easy to make and I think they are pretty good but what if they don't like enchaladas?.Maybe I should just pick up some flowers instead? I can always eat the enchaladas myself. What do you think?

  • I think it's really sweet and I'd love it!

If you feel really uncertain about it, you could give her a something like cookies instead on enchiladas, or gift cert to a restaurant that delivers (or even just pizza), but I don't know anyone who dislikes Mexican food.

  • I think it's super sweet of you to make the enchiladas!  I would definitely appreciate something you've put so much thought and effort into.  I think the dinner, the blockbuster card, and the popcorn is perfect. Smile

  • Great gift!!!  Personally, I love gifts that took time and care, like homemade things.

  • I think it's really nice :)
  • That's awesome. One of my clients would sometimes bring me dinner to take home because I worked late and she wanted DH and I to have a home cooked meal. I always appreciated it... way more than I would flowers or something generic. Very sweet of you and it seems totally appropriate given the nature of your relationship.

    Eek. *shamefully raises hands* =P

Oddly though, I had a hankering craving for burritos for 2 weeks during my pregnancy (that's when I thought...I must be having a boy!), but it ended there. But honestly, I don't know anyone else (besides my parents, sibling & me) that dislikes Mexican food, so I really think you should be safe with the enchiladas. And I think your idea for the gift card & popcorn is great too! I think it's really sweet of you to do this and she'll really appreciate it!!

  • Your gift is incredibly thoughtful.  I think you should go with your first instinct and give it to her.
  • i'm probably too late but i agree w/everyone else...totally thoughtful gift. even if she doesn't like mexican food, i'm sure she could pass them along to another family member or neighbor and she'd still totally appreciate the thought and effort you put into it :)
