Parenting after a Loss

Did you wait till 6 months for fruits and veggies

I know DD is definitely ready for them but I dont see the doctor till her 6 month appt on Aug. 20. She is downing her bottles and gets so inpatient with her cereal because she cant get it in her mouth fast enough. I am in debate if I hold out another 2 weeks or start. The only thing is I am not sure how it works....do I give before a bottle, after a bottle. She fusses through our meals now and watches us eat too. Do I wait the 2 weeks to her appt and just keep up with the cereal for now?

  • We did cereal at 4 1/2 months and veggies/fruit starting at 5months. I wouldn't think it'd be a problem, but maybe call your pedi first? DD is loving all the fruits and veggies so far. I feed her anout an hour after she nurses.

  • We started cereal at 5 months and fruits and veggies a week or two after that.  DD didn't really like the rice on its own so I added banana, then sweet potato, then pears.  All of those things are relatively un-allergenic, so I felt OK trying them so soon after cereal

  • We started cereal at 5 months and around 5 1/2 started adding. I would trust your instinct that she needs more and give it to her. Although call your pedi if you can to double check. It took a while to figure out the order for it all. Always give milk first as that is the most important. It took a few weeks to figure out the routine but his goes like this... Wake up bottle An hour later breakfast Nap Wake up bottle Noon lunch ( which is about two hours later) Nap Wake up bottle 5pm dinner 7pm bottle and bed He sometimes gets an extra bottle around 4:30 if he needs it or is hot from being out. • We started cereal at 4 months followed by fruit 2 weeks later. DD was on 3 solid (puree) meals by 6 months per doctors orders...our baby is an eater!

  • Go ahead and start. We did about 2 weeks prior to LO turning 6 months.

If you plan to make your own, I recommend buying one jar first so you can see the consistency. It's pretty watery at first.

Some doctors recommend starting with vegetables first but others don't care. Honestly, we started with bananas and LO loves everything so I really can't imagine it matters that much the order you go. So pick a veggie or fruit and have fun.

The only rule we followed is to wait 2-3 days between introducing new things to make sure there was no reaction.

  • We started them around 4.5 months. We fed them before her bottles, since at this point, it's not so much about the nutrients as the experience. We did start with purees, but rarely use them anymore. She much prefers the chewing of the BLW method! Our pedi also had us start table foods at 4.5 months as well.

  • Hey Beaner!  We started cereal at 5.5 months as per the GI that treated DS's reflux.  So we had been doing that for just over 2 weeks and then we had his 6 month check up just 2 days ago.  At his 6 month check up the Pedi told us to start solids.  I am glad I waited for his go ahead because he had a specific way he wanted us to go about it.  Today we started with a solid before his lunchtime bottle.  I always thought it was bottle than solid, but my Pedi prefers the reverse... so that is what we are trying with DS. He also said the bottle must be immediately after the solid - for now.  Also, he wants us to do fruits before veggies, which is not what I thought he would ask us to do. So for now we are cereal followed by bottle in the am and then fruit followed by bottle at lunch.  He also wants us to try a new food every 5 days, not every 3 which is what I thought it would be.  I think every Pedi will give different guidelines.

  • We just started veggies this week. So far she's only had sweet potatoes.  DH feeds her a bottle around 4:30-5 and then I get her some cereal or veggie when I get home around 6.
