Bottlefeeding BM question...

How much does your LO take per bottle (and how old is your LO)

I'm starting to have a complex that C is eating too much.  He's 15 weeks. I exclusively pump and over the past couple of weeks he has gone from taking max 6 ounces a bottle to consistently taking 8 ounces per bottle and is still sucking at the end of 8 ounces.

Can you "overfeed"???

Re: Bottlefeeding BM question...

  • Personally, I don't believe that you can overfeed a baby.  But my kids have never been big "drinkers."  DD is 9 months old and currently takes 15-20 oz/day and has been doing so since about 7 months.  I would say she took more around 20-25 at your son's age with each feeding being 5 oz.

  • Not that this helps since L is on the small side but she takes 4 oz on average...5 oz at most. I send 5-6 oz per bottle to daycare and she typically takes 4-4.5 oz a feeding. Only once in the last few weeks has she taken all 6 oz. I have read that BF babies typically take 3-5 oz on average and that you should multiply their weight times 2.5 to get the oz they should take a day. SIL gave her a little more than 7 oz once and she ended up spitting most of it up. DD is doesn't spit up often and when she does it is usually because she took too much so that might be an indication if he's taking too much.

Edit- that didn't come out right...for formula you multiply their weight by 2.5 but BF babies typically take less than formula fed babies.

  • There are all sorts of standard guidelines out there but really it depends on your kid and your milk.   Breast milk isn't nutritionally identical, if your milk has higher fat content then it has more calories per oz and so may take fewer ozs to meet the baby's needs.

"Because fat constitutes the majority of calories in breast milk, this means that some women produce more calorie-dense milk than others. Moms producing fewer calories in breast milk will need to nurse their babies more frequently."

I say feed em till they're full.   Smile

  • Um...Cooper still gets 3 9oz bottles at daycare, plus we nurse in the AM and before bed.
