  you should also be getting the referral in the mail or email depending on what you opted for you can also check if the referral went through by logging into your account on tricare. and yes it's normal but sometimes the doctor wont call you, you will have to call them. just make sure the referral went through BEFORE you schedule an appointment. you do not need to call tricare when you get the referral BUT you can call them to see if the referral went through also. and dont worry it's a pretty simple system and you dont have to take care of claims anymore

  You can call Tricare within 48 hours to get your referral information.  Many times, the doctor's office you were referred to will give you a call to set up an appointment.  You will receive a notice from Tricare within 7-10 days with all of the information as well.  This is normal, and if you need referrals in the future, you should get used to it.

  So I just switched to prime from standard. I had an appointment with my PCM and got a referral to my ob. The doctors office said they would call me with the referral. This is the first time I have had to deal with referrals and all that loveliness so I guess my question is is that normal? And once I get the referral from the office do I have to call tricare? I'm new to all this so if I sound dumb please forgive me.
  

  if you are standard you dont need a referral. one of the best things about standard.
