sleep for infant - how do you do it?

I'm having a hard time getting the baby down for naps when DS1 is awake.  DS1 is a very loud, rambunctious little boy who does not yet follow the direction "be quiet" so if I'm rocking or nursing the baby in the living room with DS1, he's way too loud for the baby to fall asleep or stay asleep.  To leave the room means to go upstairs, but I don't want to leave DS1 downstairs alone.  I'm thinking about plopping DS1 in his crib with books and just closing the door and ignoring his protests as I put the baby down.  Any other ideas?

  • I had a playpen downstairs, so I would put DD#1 in there with a bunch of toys and then bring DD#2 upstairs and put her down for nap. I had to ignore her protests; I had a second baby to care for. Then when I came back downstairs, I made sure to give her my full attention for a while. Your best bet is probably to put him in his crib.

  • Have you thought about a play yard? At least they're roomy. And find a couple new and amazing toys that only live in there so that there's some reward for being cooped up for a shot period of time.

  • The swing is my best friend and where Hayden sleeps almost exclusively during the day.  I can set her down awake in it, turn it on a low speed and she falls asleep.

  • If DS is having fun with a toy, I can leave him alone (but he's a little older than yours).  But the first time that he was really upstairs with us and interfering, I put him in his crib with some books expecting him to protest, and he LOVED it.  He thought it was so cool that his books were in his crib.  So give it a try....it might go better than you think!
