Re: Comparing maternity leave to being on vacation

  • As much as I love being home with DD, I'd hardly call it a vacation.  Speeking of vacation, I need one BADLY!

  • The my boss is evil comment really got to me.  hahaha.

Just wait until (yes, just wait) until your "evil boss" is a red faced 8 pound baby keeping you up for an hour out of every 3.

    This!

I totally thought maternity leave was going to be a vacation for me. Yeah, I think when I was crying because he was crying at 3AM and I had no idea why made me realize it was no vacation.

  • I am a SAHM but those first weeks were a lot nicer then my life had been while I was working. My boss was a two faced evil wench and not having to see her face anymore makes me want to do a jig but seriously, some people are just dumb.
  • I think once I was comfortable leaving the house with DS it became more like a vacation, but the first 4 weeks were more like endurance challenges.

  • I don't hate my job, but I definitely didn't think of it as vacation! IT's a full time job for sure!! and one you don't get a break from.

I was very resentful when DH went back to work and got to have a break all day.  Those first few weeks were hell before I got adjusted.

  • Um, it was like a vacation for me. I even returned to work with reduced hours, only 30 with Wednesdays off, and life is so much more difficult, exhausting, and stressful now. I'm tired all the time, strapped for time, DH is watching Bug while I work so his work days are now the weekends and that Wednesday, we're both just worn out.

Maternity leave was a freaking dream.

  • I love DS more than words can say, but he had reflux and colic and we seriously thought we were going to leave him at the fire station on more than one occasion. Okay, not really, but those nights were horrible. NOT a vacation.

  • I love my job, but I do look at my leave as a vacation.  But, I have a pretty easy DD, so it's been nice.

I know right! My DH goes to the gym every day on his break. While I was on maternity leave, and even now as a SAHM I wish I could have an hour break to goto the gym and relax before going back to work. At the end of the day when DH gets home, I eat dinner, put on my lazy pants, watch some TV and I am usually out by 10:00-10:30

This is what it feels like for me!  The first few weeks were anything but a vacation.  Now that we're settled into a routine, it's great to be able to be home with her.  I really don't want to go back to work!Crying  But, DH is also very good about making me get out of the house to do my own thing once in a while. That helps me keep my sanity!

  • I get what they're saying but I wouldn't compare it to a vacation.

My husband and manager must have thought it was.  I was working from home - logging on for work almost every day, I was doing laundry, washing dishes, cooking, plus watching the baby, and recovering from the delivery.

A vacation that involves the soreness "downstairs" that I had for 5 weeks is no kind of vacation I would ever want to take. Some sand, sea, sun and fruity drinks are more my style than sore lady bits & an 8 lb red faced boss. Paradise

LOL, I guess if you put it that way, I'd have to agree!

  • Like I said in the OP, I have been on maternity leave before.  I have some idea of what to expect.  And my job is horrendous right now, so I am looking forward to not coming to the office for five months.  Glad I could entertain you though.
  • It depends on your definition of "vacation." If its simply a break from whatever, then mat leave would be a vacation. If its supposed to be relaxing (how I view vacation) then mat leave isn't (at least for me ) a vacation.
  • I didn't look at it as a vacation but I was happy to be away.  There are days I'd take a crying baby over work.

There is a huge difference between working two jobs (being a mommy and working outside the home), and being on Mat leave, so if that's how you are looking at it, then I guess you could consider mat leave a "vacation".

    This!

I adore my DD and I would prefer being home with her than here at my desk 40 hours/week, but I would never consider my maternity leave a vacation! Especially the first 4 weeks. I was sleep deprived, struggling with BF, barely had time to eat or shower...definitely not my idea of a vacation. It was harder than anything I do at work. More rewarding, yes, but still harder.

I just put in a request for vacation at the end of this month b/c we are going to be really slow at work & DH doesn't get to choose his vacation days, and my boss' response was "you were just out 6 weeks, now you want to take more time off?" OK first of all I was out 5 weeks, not 6, because you acted like the department would collapse if I took the 6 weeks I was entitled to. Secondly, I have 80 hours vacation time and I have every right to use them. Thirdly, I NEED A VACATION!

  • There were days that I was seriously considering finding childcare just to catch a break.  The "mat leave" period was incredibly hard on me

That's how I look at it.  ::buries hatchet::  Stick out tongue
  •

The only thing that maternity can be somewhat compared to vacation is that I get to spend time with DD.  I don't consider vacation waking up all hours of the night, continuous cleaning and laundry.  Speaking of, I need a vacation.Paradise

I said maternity leave was more painful than the actual delivery. DS didn't get settled even a bit until he was about 10 weeks old. We were getting about 3 hours sleep in a 24 hour period. It was horrible and made us think twice about wanting another child.

Both of these for me too! My job will be a vacation when I go back! This has been boot camp!
