Babies: 6 - 9 Months

non clicky poll: Babies and Convertibles

Yesterday DS and I were on our way to the store and we were behind this convertible, top down. I thought nothing of it until I passed them I noticed a car seat. Again I thought nothing of it. Then they pulled into the same store and parked really close to where DS and I parked. Then I saw the baby! It was TINY, very very new. I am not judging taking the baby out. But seriously top down? I don't even drive with my windows down with DS in the car.

What is your opinion on convertibles and babies? If nothing else I was worried the baby was getting a LOT of sun exposure.

  • I guess I think the same - sun exposure would be crazy, especially here in the South.

I was passed the other day by a Jeep, one of the open ones, and it wasn't until it had passed me that I noticed it had a carseat in the back, and all I could see were feet, so I couldn't see how big the baby was.  It worried me a little, I think we had been talking a lot about front/rear facing that day.

You can use common sense with this one. Would I take DS for a ride for an hour at 12 oclock in the afternoon on a summer day with the top down? Probably not. One night a week, I work from 2-6 at my PT job, and DH will pick up DS at 5pm from my parents (they live 5 minutes away) and drive with the top down.

I don't see it being an issue as long as proper precautions are taken.

In terms of sun exposure, unless you keep your LO in the house 24/7, they get sun exposure. I have taken my DS to the pool/lake/beach a number of times (usually about 4 days a week). Of course we take precautions like putting him in a large hat, a SPF50 shirt, sunscreen, using a tent that is SPF50, etc.

  • We have a convertible- it's our fun car- it was an impulse purchase when DH was having a mid life crisis- around age 35! DH will drive it, if DD is not with him and I drive it if DD is not with me- its a 2 seater- so having a baby in it is not an option.

My mom has a convertible, with a backseat- she has the car seat in it and she will take DD in it for short trips, mostly in the mornings or the evenings. I don't mind- I think for short trips and as long as the child is wearing a hat it's not a big deal. Now going out for a 2 hour drive in peak sun- not a good idea- keep the top up if that's the case.

Seriously?  What's the big deal?  Everything around here is withing 10 minutes.  It's much more economical to have the windows down than the a/c going unless it's extremely hot.

I probably wouldn't have the top down with a brand new baby, but my 7 month old, and 2 and 3 year olds?  Sure thing!
