How to dress LO with a sleep sack

LO is 8 weeks old-we have swaddled with the swaddleme or muslin blankets since birth (it is 85 here now and little to no ventilation in the bedroom)

Normally he is just in a diaper with the swaddleme/muslin on top

I am trying to transition him to just using a sleep sack since I think he will start to roll over to tummy soon (he goes half way already and has excellent head control)

Right now for his nap I have him in a long sleeve snap tshirt and the cotton swaddle sack over that

If I was to use a onsie or a short sleeve tshirt under the sack would he be cold (I think so, only since we pull the sheets over us when we are sleeping)

what did you dress your LO in (during the summer-if you used a sleep sack)?

Also did you change your LO for each nap time/bed time to a long sleeve shirt for example (normally he is in a onsie or just a diaper in the house)

Just need to figure out if I need to go buy some more long sleeve tshirts

thanks!

  • We usually put G in a short sleeved or even a sleeveless onesie under the sleep sack.  Sometimes I worry that she gets chilly (sometimes she sleeps on her stomach with her arms under her, even though the room is usually about 73 degrees.  But she sleeps through the night so I don't think it bothers her.  But if it is cooler in your house you could do a long sleeved onesie, I'm sure we'll switch back to that in another month or so.

  • K sleeps in a sleep sack now and I put her in PJs (long-sleeve, feetless) and the sleep sack on top, but we've got a ceiling fan and a/c in her room, so it's comfortable. At 8 weeks I'd probably dress him in a long-sleeve onesie and sleep sack - like you said, we wear PJs and have covers so he needs something other then a diaper.
  • we use a short-sleeved onesie under the sleep sack.

we recently transitioned to long-sleeved footed sleepers, mostly because we have a ton of cute ones that they're about to grow out of that I forgot we have! They seem to sleep fine with their arms and legs free to flail about. Although Abby is scooching all over the crib on her back and hanging her feet through the rails, even with the breathable bumpers.

  • My LO sleeps in a footed sleeper and cotton Halo sleepsack at night.  We keep the house pretty cool and he has a fan going.

Does your LO feel warm or cool to you?  85 seems pretty warm, especially to be swaddling with a long sleeve shirt.  It would be a good idea to have a fan going in his room and just be careful he's not over heating (both help reduce the risk of SIDS).

  • Have you looked into a sleep sack made of merino? It's a natural fiber and can keep your little cool, or warm him up depending on room temperature.

I got mine from here but I think they might sell them on Amazon too. It has a single layer of merino on the inside and has pima cotton on the outside. I can't rave about it enough, ours is fantastic. Although it's more expensive than the Halo, it's well worth the $$$. They're sized 0-2 and DS has been in his for a year. I'll get at least another year out of it and will then dress little beanette in it.

    Hope that helps!

  • We have a window air conditioner and a fan going in the room.  The room temp is around 73-75 (according to the thermometer) but I'm sure it is lower since DH and I are always cold at night and need the covers.

LO does not seem hot to us and we keep the fans going b/c of the SIDS risk
