Names for one-syllable last name

I love Claire and Paige for a girl, and I like Samuel (which will certainly be shortened to Sam whether I like it or not) for a boy.  Problem is, our last name is one syllable.  Would you name your child a one-syllable first name if you have a one-syllable last name?

Re: Names for one-syllable last name

  • No, I would not. I gave my DS a one syllable first name but our last name has 3 syllables so I felt it balanced out. While some names (think Tom Cruise) are 1 and 1, I just think it sounds choppy. But flow is really important to me. If it doesn't bother you that much, go for it.

  • No, I wouldn't. I also wouldn't name my child a one syllable first name with our two syllable last name. I'm just not a fan. I love something that flows better when you say it a hundred times per day. One syllable first names typically sound short, abrupt and like something is missing to me. I do like them as middle names though.

  • Its not so important to me and my kids will have a 1 syllable ln. I currently have Mila/Myla as a top name for a girl, I love it and having  a 1 syllable ln does not change that.

  • I think it could be ok..just make his/her mn two or more syllables to even it out.

  • We avoided one-syllable first names because the girls have one-syllable last names.  I don't think it always sounds bad, but I generally think that multi-syllabic first names give a little more panache to a single syllable last name.

  • What about Clara?  One of my friends has a one syllable last name and used it.... soo cute!
  • I like Claire and Paige too, and I have a one-syllable last name as well. It worked for Claire Danes, so I kind of think it depends on the last name. Also, as just a theory I'm working on...it might depend on where it is in your mouth when you say it. Claire Danes stays in one area...if that makes any sense. I know Claire and Paige with my last name don't work.

  • I don't think it's a big deal as long as the names don't rhyme.

  • I really, really love Quinn for a FN, but like you, we have a one syllable last name. As much as I love Quinn, I just couldn't do it.. I've found that two syllable first names + two syllable middle names sound the best with our last name. But Ava Quinn is one of our top contenders, so I'm not as concerned about the syllables in the MN as with the FN, so.

I think it depends on what you're comfortable with, flow-wise.

  • I think it depends on the last name, but most of the time it doesn't work.
  • There are two one-syllable names that work together. Brad Pitt, for example. It all depends on the name.

  • I think it's fine, but I'm also very used to it.  My maiden name was one syllable, and we had a Tim, Tom, Pam, Dan, Matt, Pat, Elle, Doug, Lee, Mark, Jeff, and Vaughn in the family, so names like that sound normal to me.
