Anyone take childbirth classes at St Joe's?

If so, what are some of the most important things you took away from the classes?

Re: Anyone take childbirth classes at St Joe's?

  • I took it at GBMC two days before I gave birth...lol, so it was all still fresh in my mind.  I only thought the information was mildly useful and entertaining, but there are two things that stuck out in my mind that certainly helped.

One, the breathing techniques to get through the contractions (even with an epi, I still was in a lot of pain).  The techniques helped me slow down and not panic and to focus on something else and also helped alleviate some of the pain....as ridiculous as I sounded doing it!  And two, I had tremendous back labor, which I was having a very hard time managing on my own before I got the epi.  DH was so so so great about applying the negative pressure we learned about in the class, to my back, which definitely helped!

If you were thinking about skipping the class, I am sure you can look up these techniques on you tube or the like to get a better idea of what to do.  HTH!

  • I took Childbirthing classes at FSH and I ended up having the baby about a week after the last class ended. Even though most of the techniques that I learned in the class I never got to use. I still really appreciated the breathing techniques the most.

    Good Luck.

  • We ended up skipping it.  I bought a DVD on eBay for $15 and I'll watch that with DH.

I'd just heard from the majority of already informed women (who read books and did at least basic online research) that the class was pretty much useless except for the breathing techniques.  Which I can learn from a DVD!

LOL that reminds me of my breathing "technique" while in labor. I would just breathe in and out really heavy until the contraction was over. Hey, whatever works right?

EXACTLY!  I've even read/heard that the most valuable thing is to JUST BREATHE!  Not to have any kind of specific breathing pattern.
