High-Risk Pregnancy

Help: new to all this GD stuff

So I found out last week I failed the 3-hour.. all three hours.  I have an appointment with a high-risk specialist tomorrow.  As soon as I found out about the GD, I've cut the carbs (I think) and have been keeping track of what I'm eating.

However, I find myself constantly confused whether I can eat something and whether it's "carby".. for example, I read somewhere that white anything is a no-no (bread, pasta, etc..), but then is oatmeal an okay carb?  Is this tied to the glycemic index? Will it be easier when I test my sugar regularly, to see what foods affect it?

Also, please let me know if anyone has had the following problem.  I'm almost 33 weeks.  For at least 3-month, I've had zero appetite.  At the last appointment, I had barely gained a pound in a month and doc said I need to eat more.  Now that I'm actually tracking what I'm eating, I'm freaking out because the calories are just not adding up to what I should be eating while pregnant.  I need some higher calorie options that are still GD friendly.

Thanks!

  • This is all just my personal opinion based on my own experience. Others might have completely different suggestions...

I wouldn't stress about trying to figure too much out until you talk to the specialist. Once you have your parameters from them and then start testing you will be able to get some real feedback. Generally white things do spike your blood sugar but everyone is different. Rice doesn't do much bad for me but whole wheat crackers are forbidden. You learn most through trial and error. I learned I can eat carbs as long as there are lots of fats (Ben and Jerry's, cheese, peanut butter) but I have to eat half my allotted carbs if I don't have something fatty. I do make sure I eat low on the glycemic index (most things below 50). And while regular oatmeal is a no-go for me, steel cut oats keeps my numbers good all day.

Ah, also, I had no appetite this whole pregnancy and had only gained 5 pounds by 29 weeks. While some people lose weight on the GD diet, my need for fats for good numbers has actually had me gaining weight. You'll be eating enough peanut butter that it should help ; )

  • I would relax a little until you meet with your specialist so they can give specific parameters and diet instructions.  I tried cutting out carbs before I had my education and I made myself feel terrible. I was cutting out too much.

Also, we're all a little different and you will find out what works for you as you go along.  Definitely keep writing a food journal until you are more comfortable. Everyone is also different when it comes to weight gain/loss as well.  I am one who lost weight on the diet. My doctor was fine with it.  Talk with your doctor to find out what their expectations are.

don't worry!!!  You can do this!!  It does get easier.

  • I agree with the others...until you talk to a dietitian or someone knowledgeable, don't beat yourself up - just eat sensibly. Once you are able to check your numbers you will know what foods are "triggers" for you and what carbs "work". For me, I can't eat pizza. Period. The combination of crust and sauce is a killer. But, I can eat pasta, which makes no sense at all to me.

Try to eat smaller meals with snacks throughout the day. My plan is 3 meals and 3 snacks. My weight gain has been minimal (9 lbs. so far) and I'm able to keep my numbers pretty steady. Once you start checking, one high number here or there is normal, and you may find your body responds to the exact same meal differently depending on the day. And keep drinking water and exercising - a short walk or some time on our Wii Fit is key for me keeping my numbers down.

  • Check out the thread I started a few days ago

"Post your GD zero/low carb food faves!"

I agree with PPs... you'll find out what works for you.

    Good luck!

  • Thanks so much!.. You all were totally right. Saw the specialist, he said the exact same things you all said.  So I'll monitor my sugar to see what spikes it and then go from there.
  • Mary,

Glad that you saw your specialist, I really didn't get my numbers under control until about two weeks after seeing my dietitian.
