TTC After a Loss

CPW: Who performs your u/s?

My doctor does his own u/s, but I don't think that's the norm.  I love it, because he talks me through it while he's doing it.....and when I'm pregnant, I don't have to wait for him to come in to tell me what showed up on it.  Just curious what everyone else's does.[Poll]

Re: CPW: Who performs your u/s?

  • SS: At my OB both my dr and an u/s tech have done them. At the RE it has always been the u/s tech, so far.

I would hate that.  The OB that I went to for my first pregnancy had an u/s tech do it...and she wasn't allowed to say much of anything.  So you knew something was wrong but had to wait on the doctor.

My current OB does his own u/s....which I love.  Even when we found out about my ectopic (through u/s).....he was talking about what he was seeing the whole time.  While it was devastating to hear, I guess in my mind it was easier to hear it right away as opposed to having to wait for them to get him to look at the pics and say what was happening.

  • When I was KU I actually went to my MFM for all my u/s and the tech did them there. I think it would be nice to have the actual Dr do them and walk you through everything.

  • I had 4 ultrasounds within a couple weeks early on. (Low HB etc.) They were done by ultrasound techs employed by the dr @ the dr's office.

Between the 4 ultrasounds, I had 2 techs. Both told me things and showed me on the screen.

One I think said too much, but even though it was a month later that I miscarried, looking back I think she has been doing this long enough to deep down know something was up. Sad

The only u/s tech that didn't say anything or let me look at the screen was the one at the hospital. For good reason. I didn't need to see that.

  • SS:  Nurses do it for monitoring purposes unless something is wonky (then the RE steps in), RE does the 2 pregnant ones before getting released to OB.

At OB, wtih the twins, OB did a "mini" u/s every single visit with an old portable machine; otherwise my scheduled u/s were done by the in-house u/s tech.

Hugs. I can't get the "I don't see any skull bones forming. We should see them. I need to go get the dr." out of my head. I will never go into a PG u/s giddy and happy again.

Exactly. I would love to be able to be talked through it.

  • My PCP, OB & the Imaging Center where my u/s's were performed are all in the same hospital (& DH works there - very convenient). When I had my u/s's they were done by a techs who were not allowed to say anything - there was a radiologist in another room who would monitor the u/s remotely (I imagine this like a mall security guard set-up with a bunch of monitors). Usually the radiologist would come in at the end of the u/s with some info.

I hated every u/s (we were trying to date the pregnancy each time and there was always something "iffy" so I never left there feeling great) and even though in the future I'll get to see the babe - I know I'll just be terrified. Sad

  • It is a tech at my Dr.'s office.  It was a different one all three times.  But, the first one will always be stuck in my head.  I went in so excited at 7wks and she said "you got a positive test?"  "uh, yes lady!"  My heart sank right there and then I had to go back and wait to talk to the Dr. while freaking out and crying.
  • The u/s tech who did my last u/s on my first pregnancy looked at me and said "your baby is dead, i need to get the doctor".  Uh.  Yeah, thanks.  I won't forget that.

On the flip side, my current OB is very compassionate.  When I went in for bleeding at 7weeks, he immediatly wanted an u/s.  As soon as he got it in, I could see on the screen that there was nothing in my ute.  He immediatly said "I don't see a baby, I'm so sorry"  It was a totally different world.

  • At my regular OB it's the doc, at the RE it's a tech.
