I don't know why I bother (vent)

So DH and I found out that we will be having a little girl, and soon after DH started throwing names around. Over the course of the weekend we decided on the first name of Eloise (middle name tbd).

Now there isn't really family significance to this name in particular, but I have a grandma Louise and a grandma Lois, and we thought this would be a good way to incorporate that while still letting our LO have her own name. It's a beautiful name (I think), without it being used a lot or too "cutesy". We wanted a strong name that she could grow into.

So my inlaws were great when we told them, completely supportive, but I tell my mom tonight and she gets really quiet and responds with "you know she'll have to live with this name forever" and "what would you have wanted to be named". Thanks Mom.

So is Eloise a completely hideous name that I'm tying my daughter to forever? I understand if its not your particular style but imagine if you met a little girl named Eloise, what do you think. I mean DH and I both love the name, I just want to know if I'm crazy or if mom is...thanks for listening.

I think it is adorable and a name that you don't hear everyday, plus it has the potential for cute nicknames, i.e Elle, Ellie, etc. This is why we are keeping the baby names a secret from the family! Smile

I love that name! I would tell your mom to suck it up and ask her if she would tell a child to their face that you hated their name? Then why would you say it to the parent. If she continued with the negativity, I would frankly warn her that I'm going to cut her out of getting updates on her grandchild, since clearly she can't support your and your husband's right to name your chld what you would like.

I'm going to have to agree with everyone else. Eloise is such a pretty name. It's not at all up to your mom what you and your DH name your child, and if you both love Eloise, tell her that you've made your decision and it's not open for debate. or like pp said, ask her if she'd tell your child to her face that she doesn't like her name. But seriously, that's such a cute name, I would definitely keep it

Thank you guys for all managing to be more tactful than my mother. I don't know why I expected anything different, at least I know that not everyone will make fun of my daughter

and we love the nicknames Ellie and Elle, my husband can't wait to say "Mel and Elle are at home" (he's a big dork). Thank you all for making me feel better!

Eloise is a beautiful name! And if you and DH love it that is ALL THAT MATTERS. No one is going to love your LO less because they didn't like her name at first. Which is exactly why we're keeping our names secret.

As long as your DH and you love the name that's what counts. Everyone has different tastes and opinions. No matter what name you pick there will always be someone who has a negative opinion. We discovered this when throwing a few boy names around to the family and then decided to keep it to ourselves when we decide and just tell people we will decide when the baby comes. To allow people to vent their opinions I created a thoughts and comments section in my baby website where people can write name suggestions if they like. It's fun to read and a lot of people joke around about it to make it interesting.

UGH! Stick with it- I think Eloise is a sweet name that definitely isn't cutsie or trendy. Besides, if you and your DH love it, who cares what everyone else has to say about it. =]

Ditto everyone else. your mother can take her opinion and shove it (aren't I just a ray of sunshine today?). The name is beautiful and if you guys love it, you should use it!

We are also keeping our names to ourselves. My (normally totally tactful and supportive) mom blurted out that she HATED one of the names on our list (Andrew) when we started sharing our thoughts. From that moment forward, we decided that everyone would have to let the baby introduce him/herself.

I think the name is really cute, especially since she can use Eloise when she's older and Elle or Ellie when she's little. It isn't too cutesy, which is what most girl names are right now. I say way to go!

I think it's a name that is cute for a little girl and still sophisticated for a grown woman. I'm not going to worry about what anyone says about the names we choose.
