Babies: 3 - 6 Months

anyone's LO shake their head from side to side?

ds did this yesterday as he woke up from a nap in the carseat.  we had just gotten somewhere and my friend started tallking to him as he woke up and his head was shaking from left to right, like he was saying no.  freaked me out a little.  he's never done that before and it was just the one time.

we have a pedi appt. tomorrow, so i'll mention it then.  i looked online and it looks like it can be a common things babies do.  just wondered if anyone else's LO has done this.

  • DD does this all the time!  In fact I posted about it a few days ago.  She started doing it in her crib but now occasionally does it on the changing table or in her bouncy seat.   It freaked me out at first too but I googled it and asked about it here and its totally normal.   I think for DD its a soothing thing.

Sometimes if she's doing it on the changing table, I will do it with her and she'll stop and then start up again and laugh really hard.  Its hilarious now!

  • YES! Freaked me out too! Started about 3 weeks ago. I googled it because she had a cold and I thought maybe it was a sign of an ear infection.

I found that it could be an ear infection, but it's also a developmental stage too. Can also be a sleep que. Sounded like it was pretty normal.

  • My LO started doing this at 2 months and it looked like he was possessed at first.  He has now grown out of it pretty much.  Every once in a while he will do it but not as often as he use to.  I googled it too and like pp it's normal.  Mainly a self soothing thing.
  • DD shakes her head frantically side to side a lot, especially when she just wakes up and is hungry.

  • It sounds like they must do this really fast...right?

Mine does the left to right thing all the time...but at a normal speed, like she is wiping her face off on my shoulder, or just wiggling to get comfortable. I've never had her do anything that seems terribly unusual (e.g. describing as 'possessed' or something scary enough to call the Dr.).

Maybe she hasn't done this specific thing yet. But she often has her head on a swivel...looking all over, nuzzling her face on me, etc.
