Where to live in the Portland area...

Hi Ladies! I live in Seattle and DH's job has taken him to Portland lately... his company just told him today he will be there for at least another year so they are going to be paying for us to live there while he has to work there. My ? is, where do we want to live. He will be working in Portland and Hillsboro most of the time, so I'm guessing somewhere around there, but we don't know much about the area. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Once we're down there, DD and I will definitely need some new friends too! :)

Re: Where to live in the Portland area...

  • Beaverton is a great suburb between Portland and Hillsboro. Lake Oswego is nice but expensive. SE Portland has some great areas too. Hope that helps! If you have any questions let me know. I have lived here my whole life. :)

  • Just wanted to say hi!  We moved down here from Bellevue in January and couldn't be happier.  I LOVE Portland.  And the ladies around here are the nicest I have ever known.  :)
  • The Bethany area between Portland and Hillsboro is really nice.

  • It depends on what you're looking for. If you're living here temporarily and renting and don't want to worry about a yard, you can look at maybe doing a condo in the Pearl District area, which is in NW close to downtown. There are areas in N, NE and SE portland which has cute shops, restaurants, a little hippie-ish, reminds me of a lot of certain seattle areas like queen anne.  If you go to Beaverton, Hillsboro, Tigard, Lake O, it's very much suburbanish, like Bellevue.

  • I love NW portland, but the rent will probably be higher in that area. Bethany is right off the freeway and in the middle of Hillsboro and Portland. Beaverton is in the middle too. You might want to search North Beaverton to stay closer to highway 26, which is the highway that stretches portland to hillsboro. SW portland is nice too. Johns landing, Raleigh Hills, and Garden home areas would all be good.
  • We live in Tigard it is very nice we like it, but we will be moving because of DH job..So I will be moving north.. Sad
  • Tigard, Beaverton, Hillsboro...all good places. I live in the Tanasbourne area of Hillsboro right now and I LOVE it. All depends on what you want. I moved down to Tigard from Lynnwood, WA 9 years ago. Oregon is great and the people are super nice. Especially from this board. I have never met such nice women before!

  • If I was being paid to live here for awhile, I'd rent a condo in NW. It's close to the lightrail so your DH might be able to walk/take public transportation to work, but even if he can't the commute wouldn't be that bad. We live in Beaverton and it has a lot of great homes and parks, so if you want more space, I'd look out here.

  • I'd say it depends a lot on whether you prefer to be in the burbs or in the city.  I'm a city girl so I'd recommend NW Portland or inner SE.  Both have areas that are easily walkable and have access to public transport as well as quick to downtown, etc.
