I'm so bad - I look through their registries and think "yeah right, they won't use that" or "I could get them a better one of XX, but did they consider it, and not want it?"
I tend to only buy things that I felt was helpful to me that is on their registry. Sometimes I'll get something for them not on the registry if I really think it was useful but it's rare because I'll think - "did they forget it, or do they already have one" (borrowing, etc.)?
I remember registering, though - and it was kind of a joke. I had no idea what I was doing - it was just a "free for all and see what I get?" type thing. I really did appreciate the "real mom" gifts - even if it wasn't on my registry.
Did you really know what you wanted when you registered? Or did you pick things b/c you "had" to?
Re: Buying baby shower gifts
It took me a few weeks to get our registry how I wanted it. I ran my list through lots of my Mom friends (alllll of which have differing opinions on what is great & what's not, btw) and consulted my Baby Bargains book to help me/us decide on the big stuff. For the most part, our registry was all stuff I feel like we need/will use, so I appreciated getting gifts from the registry. (though I know only time will tell what we'll actually use) There were a few things that I threw on there because I wasn't sure but for the most part, the items on there were selected after great consideration. I didn't fluff it up just to fluff it up.
While I have appreciated getting registry gifts, I have also appreciated getting gifts that other moms found helpful. Quilts, bloomers and dresses with DD's name embroidered are also fun and are different from the typical blanket/outfit you normally get.
A friend of mine did something similar and also included breast pads, nipple cream, and even some wonderful anti-stress lavendar lotion. You know, stuff for me. :-) Another friend mailed a Mommy carepackage with similar items but also included thick maxi pads, laxatives, wet wipes, and other helpful post-partum items. Those kinds of gifts were really neat for me to receive.
I researched and worked hard on my registry but still was clueless so I did appreciate the gifts I may have overlooked or "must haves" from experienced mommies.
I still try and stick to their registry though since I they did put the time and effort into the registry and I would assume they researched and picked for a reason. Now, something small like pacifiers or diaper ointment I may stray but a big gift, never. If that is the high chair/swing/stroller/car seat they want then I go with it.
Now I find myself getting them something from their registry and something I consider a must- have. Each baby is different though and what works for some may not for others so I let them know it worked for us but here is the gift receipt if it doesn't work for you.
I also call if I want to stray and appreciated when moms did that for me - one mom asked if I was set on the diaper genie we registered for because she recommends the diaper champ - I said I wasn't set but we ended up gettingn both the champ and genie and preferring the genie (we had one in our master with the PNP and the other in her nursery). So, as the cliche goes..to each their own.
