what to do when CIO doesn't work (nap related)

ok so I have been trying to let DS CIO for an afternoon nap lately. We have a great morning nap and a great overnight STTN with no issues.  Day after day he cries for so long.  Its not lessening or getting easier.  I have tried everything in terms of eating timing, diapers, white noise, etc.  I can't have him screaming for that long any day.  Has anything worked for those of you where CIO doesn't?  I tried rocking him, he's outgrown his swing.  I really don't want to rely on the car, but is that my only option?

He's probably a little young for full-on CIO. Not sure if he was a premie, since he's a twin. But if he was, he's even more unready.

    Have you tried Ferber instead?

I sympathize. I tried Ferber for three weeks with my DD, who is now 19 weeks. It kind of worked, but not really. I've decided to hold off for another few weeks and try again.

  • he wasn't premie - he was full term for twins.  The dr. gave us the all clear at five moths (he usually tells patients to wait till 6 since that is when the research deems it ok) but he thought they were both mature enough to handle it based on what we told him.  I tried ferber, but they only get more hysterical if I am in there

Yup, mine too. Going in there makes it worse.

How long have you been trying?

This is DS (well except for STTN, but we do get 7-8 hrs which im totally fine with). But he's the same way, he gets so cranky as the day goes on even though he naps. Anyway, the conclusion that I've come to is that when I think he's tired (via his cues) he's actually overtired. I'm experimenting with putting him down at the first sign of tiredness, instead of waiting for two or three. I put him in his crib awake & then putz around upstairs until he falls asleep. No crying. Before if I had waited, he'd scream his head off in his crib & I'd have to bounce him & fight with him to sleep. So maybe you're waiting too long to put him down?

  • I think if they're that upset then maybe it's too early.  I would not start a new habit of the car.  Habits are formed by 6 months and you don't want to have to break that habit later!

I agree that this could be the issue. Typically by the time you start seeing eye rubbing and yawning, it's a race against the clock. Drop everything (except the baby) and run like the wind to the crib and put that kid down pronto! :)

Also, some babies aren't so good at showing their tired signs. I watch the clock, cause my baby is unreliable. If it's been 90 minutes, it's time for bed.

  • We are in the same situation.  He is about the same age.  5 motnhs and 2 weeks.  he sleeps through the night. just the past couple days have been bad.  My husband is home with him and he has had screaming fits and wont sleep.
