Success after IF

What's the earliest you would really *enjoy* taking LO to the beach?

It seems like second children go earlier because the rest of the family wants to go!  But say it's just me, DH, and LO.  At what age do you think it'd be fun to make that first trip?  Just wondering and dreaming!

Re: What's the earliest you would really *enjoy* taking LO to the beach?

  • We had Claire at the beach and way out in the ocean at 4 1/2 months in Hatteras, NC.  She was on the beach earlier at 3 months almost weekly here in MD (we live near the beach), but not in the ocean as it's too cold until August.  She LOVED the ocean and the sand from the get go.

  • We thought about it this summer, but we decided to wait and do a trip to the Outer Banks next summer. E will be newly 2, or probably closer to 27 months.

I think she'll have more fun and be able to do a lot more next year. Plus, we'll be driving and after a horrible 5-hour drive to see family, there's no way we want to tackle a 12+ hour trip with a one-year-old!!

After 20 months, 3 Clomid cycles and 4 IUI cycles, IVF #1 with ICSI = BFP!

  • I obviously don't have my baby yet but I basically live at the beach in South Fla.  So, my baby will probably be exposed to the beach/going to the beach very early in his life. It's also soo hot here in September and October and water is soo warm (89ish)  that the beach is sometimes such a relief.  I would assume we would go sometime in September or October and then my parents are snow birds and live right on the beach for the winter.

If I didn't live here and lived back in MA.  We would probably wait until next summer and our annual vacation to Cape Cod.

  • We brought DS on vacation to the beach last year at 5 months and he hated it.  Couldn't sit up so had to lay down or be held, hated the wind/sand and it was just too hot/sunny.  This year, he was 17 months and he LOVED it.  Could walk around, run into the water and wear sunscreen.  If I was doing it again, I'd say the minimum would be when he could walk but that's just me...

It's probably because (a) we live less than 2 miles from the beach, and (b) I'm a marine biologist  by training, so LO is only 3 months old and she's gone 4 times already.

I wouldn't say it's "fun" for her-- she does enjoy sitting in her Bumbo or on my lap and looking around at all the movement, bright colors, and salty smell of the ocean-- but she only goes for under 3 hours at a time as she needs her afternoon naps.

  • For a true beach vacation, we took DS to OBX when he was 4 months and then 8 months.  8 months was much more fun.  We're going again when he'll be 20 months - i'm expecting that to be a blast.

  • We took Jacob to the beach when he was 4 months, but he and we couldn't really enjoy it.  He couldn't sit up and that made a huge difference when we went a few months later at 6 months.

This year we went again and he LOVED it.  We couldn't really relax on the beach because he was running around and having a great time.  But it was so much fun!

  • I guess it all depends........I think you can take any age baby to the beach (easiest when they are younger since they just lay around on a towel/tent!)......

But, if YOU want to really enjoy it, then I would say closer to 2 when LO can actually play in the sand/water and entertain themselves.

I *think* the worst age for the beach is between 9-14 months because that seems to be the time when all they want to do it eat the sand!

But, honestly, you can take LO whenever you want. If you want to go now, go for it!

We took DS1 to the beach for the first time when he was 7 months old and DS2 when he was only 8 weeks :)

  • DD first went to the beach when she was 6 months old, she was kinda scared of everything- but at least she could sit up in her little tent and play. We are going again when she will be 9 months- I am interested to see how that goes. We are already planning a trip to Mexico when she will be 15 months Im sure that will be a blast, becasue she will be walking and running all over the place!

  • We took LO at about 6 months.  She'd been sitting up for over a month at that point, so I was able to put her on a towel in the sand and she liked it.  You just have to be on lookout...they try to eat the sand :)   We also could stand her up (holding onto her hands) in the water..and that was fun!!
