Health insurance with maternity coverage? (XP with TN)

Hi all, I am usually on the Knot/Nest but I figured you ladies would know more about this, being that it is the Bump and my question relates to maternity coverage Smile

I am shopping for an individual health insurance plan. I am currently covered through my husband's Army benefits, but he is about to get out of the Army. He will continue to have coverage as a disabled veteran, but I am having trouble finding an individual plan for myself with maternity coverage.  We are moving to San Marcos next week and I will not be getting benefits through my new job.

Do you know of any health insurance companies that offer maternity coverage? Any alternative options? I am open to any suggestions and value all the help I can get! TIA!

  • I think Scott and White is the main one that offers maternity coverage in our area.  You would have to use a Scott and White facility (there's one in Round Rock, not sure of any more south).  Most others exclude pregnancy due to the expense.
  • If you aren't interested in traveling to Round Rock for Scott & White, I suggest finding a good plan that covers at least emergency situations (c-sections, other complications) as well as covering the baby for complications.  That is basically the health insurance coverage I have and I'm paying for everything else OOP.  I have a great doctor in San Antonio, who I'm happy to recommend if you wouldn't mind traveling there, who has been really nice to work with my situation and is very understanding of the whole thing.  I also like the fact that he is in a practice by himself, which means you get to see him every time you go in and it really makes it feel like you are getting your money's worth seeing the doctor each time.  I've done a contract with the doctor for around $3000 off the top of my head and the hospital has quoted me about the same for the c-section and stay.  I know that there are insurance companies that charge a lot of money for maternity benefits and most of them won't kick in for at least a year after you have had the coverage (S&W is the only one that doesn't, I applied and didn't get approved or else I probably would have gone with it for peace of mind, even though it is quite a drive, I live in the Dripping Springs area).  Anyway, after factoring in the cost of how much you would pay the insurance company over a year, it figures just a much to pay OOP and just save up for it on your own.  HTH!
  • We used a very knowledgeable agent to find our individual plan. I would highly recommend him. He is actually the brother of one of the nesties on this board. There are some other plans that offer maternity riders as long as you are not pregnant yet. If you want to email me at kim777 at aol dot com then I can give you our agent's info.

What is this called? Or would you mind sharing what company you found something like that with? We have considered going the midwife/birth center route but worried about what would happen if there was an emergency.

I have looked in to S&W. For some reason the plans they are showing me online don't include maternity so I didn't realize they were an option.

We don't plan to become pregnant right away, but hope to in less than 12 months so that is another concern.

  • I have what is called a "major medical" plan.  I'd be happy to give you more info on it, feel free to email me kristen at kristenjoymoore dot com
