Best convertible car seat...

I am looking to get the next car seat for my DS and having a hard time deciding on what to get based on test ratings, and what I really need?  For example, now kids can stay in the 5-point harness until 65 lbs... do the kids really stay in it that long, what is your experience?  Also, does anyone know what is the top-ranked convertible car seat on consumer reports?

TIA!!

Re: Best convertible car seat...

  • I also want my DS to stay rear-facing until 33 lbs or so  and that is why I am looking for a convertible CS.

  • Britax seats are highly rated.  We have a Roundabout.
  • We have the popular Britax Marathon.  Always gets great reviews.  Will have her rear facing as long as possible and will use the 5 points for quite a while yet, too.

  • DD is in a Britax Marathon and in the 96% for height. She will remain rear facing until she maxes out that seat.
  • I have a britax boulevard....when i research car seats britax seemed the way to go....
  • I have the radian85 by sunshine kids.  It was a tough call between the britax and this carseat.  Both are great seats so you can't really go wrong.  The radian fits taller and kids better and has a higher weight limit.  DH and I are tall and we wanted to fit 3 across the backseats and this seat is narrow enough to be able to do it.  Plus, it's the only seat made with a stainless steel frame.
  • Britax.

The sales guy told us that Britax is crash tested up to 65 mph and no other car seat is.  He told us that many other car seats are only crash tested up to 30 mph.

Could have been a bunch of bull to up-sell us.  I have no idea if it's true or not.

Then we got another brand for an extra car seat in DH's car.

I seriously can't stress enough the difference in quality.  The straps, plastic, covering, isulating material, seat padding, everything seems cheaper on the non-Britax seat.  My toddler whines when we put him in it and tells us he wants his brown seat (the Britax) so apparently it's not as comfortable either.

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
  • I have an FP Safe Voyage, which is made by Britax, even though it's labeled Fisher Price.  It's recommended by our car seat safety inspector, and she has it for her daughter, so that's a good enough rec for me.

I'm not sure they still make them.  They only go up to 55 lbs forward facing, though, but DD is a lightweight, so that'll last us a good long while.

  • We have the Britax Marathon in both of our cars.  It can be rear facing up to 35lbs (we still have DS rear facing and he is totally comfortable in the seat!).  They are expensive, but so worth the money, IMO.
