Trying to Get Pregnant

short term disability

I posted yesterday and got some really great answers about short term disability insurance.  I decided to call Aflac today to ask some questions and perhaps start a policy, only to find out that they do not offer individual short term disability policies.

Can anyone recommend another company to look into for short term disability that offers to individuals since m school district does not offer short term?

 Thanks!

Re: short term disability

  • i actually made a mistake yesterday: my insurance is through American Fidelity.  i don't know if they offer it individually.

you could always try google :)

  • I'm surprised I have short term disability with AFLAC.  I used it with my last pregnancy you get 5 weeks of pay for regular delivery.  Plus they have a hopital rider that pays about 500 dollars for a regular hospital stay for delivery.  I would call back and talk to someone else!

  • I'm guessing they gave you some wrong information, AFLAC does offer short term disability.

May I suggest just taking what you would pay monthly and putting it into a separate savings acct.  This way when you go to have you baby you will have a nice little savings built up.   I believe with AFLAC you have to have short term disability one year for using it with pregnancy.  You may want to double check that though.  We use to have this at work, but got rid of it because of the way people abused it and what the salesperson from AFLAC would tell our employees about lying to get money.

You have to get Aflac through your employer. I don't believe you can get it on your own. Find out from your employer and they should be able to give you the name of their Aflac agent.

  • I tried to get AFLAC on my own and couldn't-it has to be through your company.  I have purchased a policy with Humana that is a hospitalization policy-it pays for any hospital stay, including childbirth.  It will end up paying $2400 for a regular delivery, $2800 for a c section and I'm paying $50 a month. Its not actual short term disability, but will provide some extra money for maternity leave.   I already have short term disability through work so I was looking for something to add to it.  The only "catch" is that the policy has to be in place for 10 months before you can use it, so if I get lucky and get pregnant this month I'll have to cancel the policy.

I have hospitalization coverage through my health insurance, I'm looking for something to still give me some income after the baby is born.

I know I can set money aside myself, and have been doing that, but was looking for something that would provide more than me just setting aside $30 a month or whatever.  From what I understand Aflac gives you something like 50% of your pay for 6 weeks.  Thats a bid difference.

My employer does not offer short term disability through Aflac or any other company, so Im trying to find it on my own.  I called Aflac again, and got the same answer...they don't offer to individuals unless it goes through your workplace.  I'm waiting on a return phone call from Metlife.

  • I have a STD policy through Mass Mutual but it is one I enrolled in through my former employee several years ago. I was able to keep the policy when I left and pay annuallly for the coverage.  I honestly don't know if one can purchase a policy without going through an employer.  GL!

I could be wrong, but my undestanding is that STD can only be offered through an employer. Since it is based on income level, they generally have to get that info from the employer. If you change jobs, you can carry the policy with you to a new employer, but if you become unemployed, they will usually cancel the policy.

I would talk to your HR dept. My agency does not have to contibute anything to my policy--it is solely funded by me. I would be really surprised if they didn't have some type of option for you.
