What are your thoughts on siblings sharing a room?

Re: Siblings sharing a room

  • I shared a room with my sister until we got a bigger house when I was 10. I remember it being tough for me because she snored but otherwise it was nice to have her right there (she's younger) when she got scared. Overall I have fond memories of it except for her snoring Smile

We had bunk beds and a little play area and TV in there so we could occupy ourselves.

  • My sister and I always shared a room. It was difficult at times, but in reality she was the best roommate I ever had, except for my husband.

If we have a second child, they will have to share a room with Ada. Our house isn't very big, but our mortgage is very low, so it makes sense for us not to move.

  • I think its great and I think its a little sad that this isn't the norm anymore; however, I think when kids get in to their teens it can get very difficult as they are each trying to create a separate identity and they start to crave privacy more and more.  DH and his brother shared a room until older brother was about ~15 (and DH was 12); their dad solved the problem by expanding a small work room in their basement into a bedroom for the older brother.  I thought it was a smart idea.

  • I'm glad to hear this. Like Matilda, our mortgage is pretty low and with paying for DS's high school tuition, it isn't in our cards to move in the next couple of years. We talked to DS about moving into the smaller room if we have another, and he was all for it surprisingly.

If we have a boy though, I'm not sure what we would do. Our basement is refinished and DH said he could put a room down there for DS (for a teenage boy, that would be awesome).

  • If you have a boy, I think it would still be fine for him to share a room with Ava for at least a few years. This is our plan if the second kid is a boy. I think it is appropriate until the older child is about 11-12.

Even if they only shared until Ava was 5 or 6 then your older son would probably be away at college, and could bunk with the smaller boy for the small amount of time he was home, or could move to the basement then.

I am all for doing whatever it takes to keep housing  costs low. We could not live the way we do now if our mortgage was higher.

  • I had my own room growing up, but slept in my younger brother's room for years when we were young.  He had bunk beds.  :)  Plus, my bedroom was on the 1st floor of our house and my parents and my brother's rooms were both upstairs, so I liked being closer to them.

I think it is nice when younger kids can share a room.

  • My brother and I shared a room for a few years when we were very young. We were only 19 months apart and our older brother is 10yrs older. So, once he moved into the basement at 17 we got out own rooms.
  • I never shared a room with a sibling but I don't see a problem with it at all.  I think the only problem you would have is one or the other could have issues because of the others sleeping habits.

  • DD & DS will share a room once we put him in the crib (right now he's in the bassinet by our bed) - our house has 4 bedrooms, but 2 are up and 2 are down and we aren't ready to move either one of them to another floor (DD has learned how to use the potty and is dry for the most part overnight, but sometimes we need to help her get to the potty in the morning, etc.)

  • Up until I was 9 I shared a room with my older sister AND my younger brother.  (We were ages 11, 8, 7.)  We had a set of bunk beds and a twin bed in our room.  There was another bed room, but we used that as our play room.

At the age of 9 we moved to a different house.  At that house my sister and I shared a room until she was 16 and I was 13.  For my sisters 16th birthday she got her own room.  (My dad re-purposed a room in the basement.)

My little brother used to have really bad nightmares.  At the new house we'd often wake up to find him asleep on the floor in our room.  Once my sister got her own room, I got a daybed that had a trundel bed underneath.  It was supposed to be for friends sleeping over, but it was used almost nightly by my brother.  Until I was 16 and little brother was 15 the only time he slept in his own room was if he or I had a friend staying the night.

I have lots of wonderful memories of staying up late at night talking to my sister and brother in hushed whispers or sitting in the dark with a flashlight reading stories.  I definitely think it made us closer.

  • My sister and I shared a room until we moved into a bigger house.  My sister had her own room, but there were two beds in my room (because they were matching twin canopies).  We still slept in the same room for a looong time.
