What's your preferred party time?

Do you like an 11:00 a.m. party or a 3:00 p.m. party?

And if a party runs from 11:00 a.m. to noon, would you expect lunch?

Also, would I be crazy to have Marion's party on her birthday (Saturday, September 18th) when I'm due September 28th?

Re: What's your preferred party time?

  • Either time is good.  If you had an 11am party I would expect lunch or at least some food for snacking.  We usually at at 11:30, so I know they would be hungry.

It's 10 days before your due date.  Unless you went into labor early with M I would think you would be okay.

  • I would prefer 3pm, 11am means that she sleeps in the car on the way home, which is never good.  And 11am, I expect lunch.

    That's a good point.

  • 3 sounds better. I wouldn't expect more than a few snacks.

  • 3 pm would be my preferred time.  I do think lunch would be expected at a party that went from 11 am to noon.

No, you're not crazy to have a party then.  But just try to take it easy as you prepare.

  • i like the 11:00am time because my dd naps b/w 1-4 each day.  so she's super happy in the first part of the day.  and i do have lunch for everyone.

i think you're not crazy to have her party before you're due and agree with the others, take it easy.

  • EIther time is good but I would lean towards 11 for us since Rena naps anywhere between 1-4 on the weekends. I would expect lunch at a party that starts at 11.

Do you like an 11:00 a.m. party or a 3:00 p.m. party?  3pm is better for naptimes, most kiddos around 2 take a 12 ish nap, so 11 can be challenging.

And if a party runs from 11:00 a.m. to noon, would you expect lunch?  Yes. Especially with kiddos, that is their lunchtime.

Also, would I be crazy to have Marion's party on her birthday (Saturday, September 18th) when I'm due September 28th?  I think you are. Brady came 9 days early.  I would do it at least 1 week early. She won't know :-).  We actually didn't have a party for Grant for this very reason.

  • 11 is better for us because the big nap time is from 1:30 until 3:30.  At 11, I would expect lunch or a decent amount of heavy snacks (finger food).

Since I had issue with both pregnancy and had both girls early, to me going up to the due date is not a reality for me (but if your pregnancy went well with #1 up to the due date and past and #2 is going the same route, then mid Sept should be fine). I would say to maybe consider her bday party at the beginning of Sept versus mid.  And on her actualy birthday, you can have a private celebration with just a small cupcake and the immediate family.  Is baby is present, even better! =)

  • We have yet to make it to a 3pm party/event. Naptime here is pretty solidly established from 2-4 or 4:30. I bet that'll change with MDO, but for now I would prefer 11.

I would expect more food at 11 than at 3, but not necessarily a full lunch.

I don't think it's crazy to plan it for her actual birthday, but I probably wouldn't send out the invites super early.

  • I'll join the 11 party ~ my girls have always gone down for naps around 2 so 3 just has never worked.  And yep, I'd expect food.  (we're hosting an 11 am party in a couple weeks and providing lunch)

My only concern with the party so close to your due date is that both my girls came early - 13 and 6 days early.I might push it one week earlier just to be safe.

  • Is it an outdoor or an indoor party?  If it's outdoor than I would do 11am for sure, indoor I think either time is equally as good.  I would expect lunch or heavy snacking at 11am.  I would just put on the invite, snacks will be provided, or lunch, cake and ice cream to let people know.

I wouldn't go that close to my due date, but DD was 3 weeks early so I am paranoid.  For this reason we are looking at doing her 6th b-day party on Sept 18th even though her b-day is the 26th ... and I'm not due until 10/15.  Just being overly cautious!

  • We take the late nap too.  Somewhere between 1 and 4 so a 3pm party can be a challenge for us.

He's wide awake at 11.  As for lunch, I think heavy snacks would be good.  Maybe tea sandwiches?

  • I like 3:00 because they get a good nap in before which = happy kiddos.

Then the party wears them out so they good to bed exhausted which = happy parent

  • Either time is ok but at 11 I would expect more food than at 3.

I don't think you're crazy to have M's party that close to your due date, just plan ahead and recruit lots of help.  The first time I met SIL (and all of DH's extended family) was at niece #1's 2nd birthday party in August 2004.   SIL was 38 weeks pregnant with twins!! She was a trooper, a huge, hot, tired, swollen trooper but everyone pitched in and the party was great.  And she had the twins 2 days later, so all that birthday excitement might get things moving for you too.  Big Smile

  • When does M nap? I would pick the time that ultimately fits her schedule and just go with it :) If you pick 11 I think you should serve lunch; at 3 cake and ice cream is sufficient. I am not sure about having it close to your dd. A was two weeks early so I probably wouldn't based on our track record. But if you didn't have issues before with M coming early then you're probably fine.

This.  It is her party and she is the birthday girl.  You don't want to have a cranky party girl.  And now I don't think you are crazy for having it on the 18th.  I would probably do the same in if I was in your situation.

  • 3pm - b/c DS naps for 2 hours anywhere from 11-2ish.

However, when he was <1year old, I would have preferred the 11 time b/c it would have been inbetween his 2 naps during the day.

So, it depends on what kind of crowd you are gearing towards.

  • 11am usually works best for us. If a party is at 3, that means I will have had to wake Joe up from his nap at 2:20-2:30 and he is SUPER cranky when he is woken up.

I generally always expect food at a party, no matter what the time.

I agree.   11:00 am parties make me cringe because ds will be cranky because he is getting hungry and then after eating, gearing up for nap time.  I would definitely expect a decent amount of food at a 11 am party.

Yikes!  I always plan parties at certain times, like mid-afternoon, so I don't have to provide food!   We only had cake at ds's b-day party this year.

  • 3:00...  My kids eat lunch just after 11 and are napping by 12:30.  If they fall asleep in the car, we have trouble (Luca never transfers from car to bed).  By 3:00 they are in a good mood and ready for fun.

Yes, I'd expect lunch at an 11:00 party.  I assume most kids eat between 11 and 12.  I wouldn't expect more than some light snacks and cake at 3:00.
