info on Stafford/Sugar Land area

Hi ladies,

We are thinking of moving from in-town to the 'burbs--we just need more space.  We're not ready to buy in this market and are thinking of renting again.  Looking for info/reviews about the Sugar Land/Stafford area.  My husband works on the east side of town at 610/10 (by the Budweiser plant) and we are worried about his commute, but I've heard either the Ft. Bend toll road or 90/Main isn't too bad...is that true?  I guess I'm most asking about the driving time/commute into town from either of those areas, and any subdivisions or neighborhoods to avoid.  Are there pretty active moms' groups out there?  TIA!!!

Re: info on Stafford/Sugar Land area

  • Im a little further down the freeway In Richmond. IMO, I think Sugar Land is a little more kiddo/family friendly than Stafford. As far as the commute to Buddweiser, I dont know a whole lo about the ft bend toll road, but I think it totally depends on the time of day. EVERY freeway in Houston is bad between 6:30am- 8ish-am...and again from 4:30-730pm.

90 has quite a bit of stop lights, and it can get very ugly at times.

Im curious about a moms group in Ft Bend too!! Ive recently become a SAHM and need to get grown-up interaction a few times a month, lol...

    Good luck!

  • We live in the north part of Sugar Land and love it here! There's lots to do in this area, and it's easy to get ITL or most any place in the city for that matter.

My DH works at 610 and Bellaire and it can take anywhere from 20 min to 45 min for him to get to/from work. According to him it's a pretty tolerable ride.

As far as neighborhoods... I really don't think there are a whole lot of places you can go wrong. We rent as well and although I'm not sure what your budget is there are a TON of really nice houses in great 'hoods in the $1400-$1800 range. If you don't have pets, or have smaller pets, there would be even more options. We have two large dogs that make it a little harder for us.

Some neighborhoods to check out are: River Park, Greatwood, First Colony, Sugar Lakes, and New Territory. All of them are fairly easy access to 90, 99 and 59. Good luck!

ETA: I'd also look in Richmond (the more southern part) before I looked in Stafford.

  • We live in Sugar Land, in New Territory and we love it.  The schools are great out here so we plan on staying here a while.  My baby is only 6 weeks old so not sure about any mom's groups yet but I am looking for some now.  The traffic on 90 is not that bad once you get past Stafford and then it's all freeway for awhile.
  • We live in Sugar Land and currently rent in Greatwood - definitely great access to 59, etc. We moved to Sugar Land from California last summer and I got pregnant a few months later. Since I work from home, haven't really gotten a chance to meet alot of people in Fort Bend. My little girl is currently 4 weeks and I too am looking for a mom's group. Maybe with the ladies that just posted, we can form a mom's group. =)

For those that have found any mom's groups, please let me know, I would be interested in meeting up with grown ups as well.

I like that idea, we can atleast have a 4 member group! I just transitioned to a SAHM due to pregnancy complications, and I just would rather be at home with DD then send her to her babysitter. Anywho, I need mommy friends!! lol

  • we want to move too!  we currently live in westchase and it is very close to work in the galleria but we're ready to go!
  • I'm in Richmond also and looking for moms in the area.  If a group comes together some one let me know!

  • I'm in Richmond, not Richmond/Rosenberg area, but Richmond, next to Katy area.  99 and west park tollway, 5 min from New Territory.  Anyway, where we live we are in between, I-10 and 59 right before the west park and the commute to I-10 is not bad at all.
  • Thanks to everyone for the replies!!  I am so scared for us to pull the trigger--we have always been in-towners and I mapquested the drive from the areas y'all mentioned and it just looks so FAR!  There are so many benefits I see though, and we just can't find a decent home in town for the right price.  We're looking for a place less than 2k/mo.  If we do decide to move I'd be up for starting a group--we have a 9mo and I've recently transitioned to SAHM too.  I did find two Sugar Land moms groups on a google search--they have it split into West and East.  It looks pretty active so maybe that's an option.
  • easiest access to ft bend toll is sienna plantation in missouri city

easiest access to 90 main would be glen laurel area, gannoway lakes, sugar lakes

  • A couple of other Nesties and myself have a West Side mom's group... you can find us here. Our membership is a little low because we just switched over from Meet Up and not everyone followed us over. Let me know if you have any questions!

  • I second the "all the freeways here suck" motion. I live in Greatwood but all of Sugar Land/Missouri City seems to be a good area to raise kids. My DS is only 2 weeks old so I have no idea about the mom groups plus I'm only 20 so I don't even know if I would be welcome. Stick out tongue (Oh and if you can pick between Greatwood and Canyon Gate...go with Greatwood. I don't know why it's different even though they are close but I think Greatwood is much better. Also, don't go with Tara even though it's also right next to Greatwood.)
