Stay at Home Moms

Do you have someone you can use for babysitting during the day?

Like if you have an appt or just need some time away.   How much do you pay?  I really need to find someone like this.

  • I use my mom. I sometimes watch friend's kids for them. Maybe you can find a sahm to trade hours or pay?

  • I've been using my mom and MIL this summer while they were both off of work, but now that school is starting I am going to have to find someone else.  I have a friend that is also a SAHM and we have talked about trading services every now and then as needed.

  • During the summer/holiday weeks, I have my mom, who is a teacher.  Otherwise, I have my MIL who is retired (but lives 1.5 hours away).

  • I have SAHM friends and we swap childcare with each other.  None of us have family in the area so it's worked out really well.

  • Right now, my daughter (Jordan - who is 17 and will be in her senior year of HS) is home for the summer and I had her watch him a couple times when I went to work for a few hours (I have a very part-time job)...and a few times while I ran errands.  She's really good with him and I'm never more than 5-10 minutes away should there be a problem.

Other than that, I've had my mom watch him a few of times when I've had a dr's appt or I've had to take Jordan to see a specialist and knew we'd be there for a while.  I'm taking Jordan to see a local college on Thursday and my mom is coming to stay with Ben so I don't have to make him sit through the one hour information session and then drag him around for the hour tour.

I've also swapped sitting with a woman in my moms group who I am friends with.  Her son and Ben are best buddies, so it helps each of us out and the boys get to play.

  • Yes, on occasion. I pay $12 per hour.

  • Nope, I don't have anyone at all to fall back on when things come up.  I usually have to ask my DH to adjust his schedule to work from home or have the time off when I need to do something like a doctor's appointment.  Or I take DS with me.

  • My sister lives about 20 mins away and she is a SAHM so she will usually help me out.

And I just got info for a babysitter that someone in my playgroup recommended for times when my sister can't help out.  She charges $10/hr.

  • We have a really good friend whose oldest daughter is 15, so we use her quite a bit. With school starting soon, I have tried to make sure I schedule any of my appts for late afternoon (school gets out at 2:35.) I will also be going back to work a couple evenings a week soon and she will come be with the girls until DH gets off work.

  • If my mom has they day off she will gladly take ds.  If she isn't my sister is usually willing to take him for me.  It's nice to have helpful family near by.

  • Unfortunately not. If I have a doctors appt that I can't take DD to, my DH has to take off work.
  • So far I've only left DS with my MIL and they love to watch him so they wouldn't accept payment.

As a back-up, one of DH's nieces has offered to watch him.  She is 16 and charges $6/hour.

I'm very wary of leaving DS with strangers and even with the niece - I'd want to have her watch him here while I was home first before I felt comfortable.

  • I use my former nanny.  I worked when my older two girls were younger.  She works for other families now but she'll take my kids if I need her to for an hour or two.  I generally pay her around $15/hr.  I'm usually only gone an hour and I end up giving her $20 mainly b/c I usually run to the ATM right before and I don't have smaller bills.
  • Yes, we have a college student that babysits for us day and night. It's great. We pay $11-12/hr for 2 kids (the range is because I just round up a lot from $10/hr she requested when we only had one kid.
  • I have a few SAHM friends and we sometimes will trade off. If I'm in a bind I will use a few of the drop-in childcare facilities that are nearby. The kids love going there and I pay anywhere from $10-12/hr for both kids.
