Long story short, DD has CDiff. Just found out this afternoon from me calling to talk to the nurse about her diarrhea getting worse. The pedi is supposed to call me back today, and apparently we will start her on Flagyl-not really sure what else the plan is.
I'm just wondering if anyone has gone through this? Any tips or advice as a parent? She also has a red diaper rash that I'm sure is yeast-did just monistat work, or did you have to get something stronger? I'm feeling really lost and sort of guilty here (I'm afraid I brought it home from work), and just would like to hear if anyone else here has gone through this.
Re: Anyone have experience with CDiff and LO? :(
I've seen a few cases of it at work from the antibiotic Clindamycin. Was your LO on this or any other antibiotic? Flagyl (or metronidazole) is first line treatment, if that doesn't work, they usually do Vancomycin. But it's pretty easy to treat. I know the #1 sign of C. Diff is extremely foul smellng diarrhea that is sometimes green and frothy. Don't feel guilty...it's nothing you did!
As far as the diaper rash, I always prescribe an antifungal, but you can use OTC Lotrimin (Clotrimazole) mixed with 1% Hydrocortisone cream 2x day for 2-3 weeks. Use a barrier like Zinc Oxide or Aquaphor with each diaper change and do not use baby wipes.
Hope your LO feels better soon!!

I would recommend some sort of probiotic to build up the good bacteria (I know that they make them for children, just not sure which ones). Yogurt can also help if your DD will eat that.
Hope she's feeling better soon!!
OMG, ME!! We just went through this in June, right before her first birthday. She was hospitalized because of dehydration (couldn't keep anything down) for 5 days and had a prolapsed rectum. We are just now getting back to normal.
Some tips for the Flagyl, is tastes absolutely HORRIBLE. My dd kept gagging and could hardly keep it down. We got ours remade at a compounding pharmacy (the cherry flavoring that most pharmacies can do does not mask the flavor AT ALL). The compounding pharmacy saved us. They used metronidazole benzoate instead of the regular metronidizole, it's much less bitter. Then they flavored it with marshmallow flavoring. It was SO much better and seriously saved us. We did Flagyl for 10 days, then the diarrhea started to clear up about a week after we finished (it was still bloody and mucousy until then). She was feeling great and doing awesome but did test positive after we took her to the pediatric GI so we did another round of Flagyl. There were no symptoms the second time, so now if it comes back we are going to wait until we see symptoms to treat. I have done SO much research because she had pseudomembranous colitis and a very severe case of the C. Diff.
Also, she had the horrible bloody open rash and it was yeast. We did clotrimazole plus steroid prescription and that did it. Then she got the rash back and the GI specialist prescribed nystatin which seemed to do it. We would put a layer of pinxav on over it. The rash was SO bad, almost the worst part (until our hospital stay).
PLEASE PM me with any questions. It was so hard to find reliable info and moms with experience when we went through this.
Ohhh yes, meant to say we also started her on the probiotic Florastor while in the hospital and added Culturelle to it when we got home. We have ordered both from our local pharmacy. It will usually be behind the counter or you may have to have them order it in.
Turns out our LO most likely developed a milk protein allergy which caused her good bacteria in the intestines to be down and allow the C. Diff to take over. We were NOT on antibiotics beforehand.
#1 thing is make sure you wash your hands SUPER well when you change her, hand sanitized will NOT kill it. C. Diff also has spores so you may want to wash anything she comes into contact with. We super sanitized our house before she came home because we didn't want her to get it back. There is something like a 20% recurrence rate. Hopefully you got it soon enough and it will clear right up and never come back without getting to the point my LO did. Just be on the lookout for the symptoms to come back.
OMG THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! I knew I remembered someone posting about taking LO to the hospital for cdiff but couldn't remember who and couldn't find the post in my posts. It was you I was thinking of and was hoping would respond!
At this point the pedi is finding a place to compound the meds-we are starting on flagyl and vancomycin as soon as they get it done. Fortunately I don't think we're too bad off-DD is more tired than usual but besides the horrific diaper rash seems to be acting ok. Hopefully she stays ok. Thank you for the tips about flavoring the flagyl-I'll make sure they do that before I bring the prescription home since I have to drive over an hour to pick it up (no place locally compounds). Great tip!
I plan on power cleaning on saturday. I already have DH agreeing to take DD out of the house and a friend is coming over to help me bleach everything she can/has possibly touch(ed).
Again, thank you for responding! I'll definitely PM you if I have any questions. I'm glad to hear your DD is finally getting back to sort of normal. Sounds like you guys had a terrible time with it. Poor thing.
Yes, unfortunately DD was on back to back antibiotics for a while because of recurrent ear infections, so I'm sure that's what caused it. Thank you for the tip for a RX for diaper rash-I wouldn't have thought to ask, but they're giving us one now! Hopefully it at least keeps it from getting worse.
