Babies: 0 - 3 Months

How long does everyone plan on BF/EP?

My husband and I have been discussing this and reading up on it. I know that I always wanted to do a year but a lot of people do 6 months and some of my friends have done up to 2 years. What is everyone's thoughts on this?

Re: How long does everyone plan on BF/EP?

  • I'm hoping to BF for 6 months. That is my goal. I go back to work at the end of this month so we will see if pumping will keep up my supply or not.

  • I BF and supplement each feeding, but I plan to continue to BF until 6 months.  I hope I can make it that long!

  • It honestly depends. I've been pumping since she was 3 days old (she's 9 weeks and 2 days now). When I find a job and start working again will depend on if I stop or continue.
  • I am an EPer since day one due to lathcing issues. I take it one day at a time but my goal is 6 months (minimum). I'm half way there Stick out tongue
  • My goal is 6 months as well.

  • I BF #1 for 15 months and #2 for 16 months.  I plan to do the same this time around.
  • I would like to avoid formula if at all possible so my goal is to BF and/or Pump for a year at the least.

  • Goal is for one year.  I know most people go to only 6 months, but I've heard that BF is easiest after the 6 month mark.  Plus LO will be starting on solids at that point so I won't need to BF as much as I do now.
  • I bf until my dd was a year (she weaned herself because I was pregnant with ds and my milk changed) and I am currently still bf my ds who is 14 months...plan on going until he is 18 months to 2 years.

This. Originally I planned 6 months but I've had such an easy time with it and have grown to love it so I'm hoping for a year now.

    This.  Hopefully at least 18m

  • Planning on at least 2 years and then to let her self wean. DD1 nursed to 3 yrs 2 mos.

  • I BFed DD for 14 months. I found that the more solid foods she ate, the less she wanted to nurse, and she weaned herself at that age. I'm assuming the same will happen with DS.

  • I EP and am hoping to make it to 6 months. I really don't mind doing it all that much. I return to work in September so we'll see how easy it is for me to continue. I have my own office so I'll be able to shut my door and pump...and my job isn't all that demanding, so I'm hoping it goes well!
  • My goal is six months, and then starting to slowly wean.  My degree is in Nutrition and while it has been a long time since I have been in school- 6 months sticks out in my mind as being a good length of time.  That being said we will see how it goes-LO is having weight issues.

  • I want to continue breastfeeding 9 months to a year if I can!

  • At least a year, and we'll see where LO and I are at from that point.

  • i hope at least a year, and we'll see at that point. i am willing to nurse her until about 2 1/2 but we will see.

DS was a preemie and would not latch, plus had horrible reflux that he needed tons of meds and thicker feeds for. i EPed for him for 10 months, and at that point i stopped since i had enough milk in the deep freezer to get him to a year on breastmilk.

  • Anything over 6 months would be a bonus for me!
  • I'd like to BF for a year, but I'm taking it day by day. I'm not sure how long I'll actually make it.

  • We are planning on BFing for up to one year but DS has a milk-soy protein intolerance which really restricts my diet and I am worried about my calcium levels so I might only make it to 6 months - we will reassess our plans then.

  • A year would be ideal, but my goal is six months. I go back to work in a month so we will see how pumping goes. I travel and am at clients, so it gets tough to find time/space to pump. I learned with DD1 how diligent you need to be or lose your supply. I BF her until 4.5m. I have almost 300oz in the freezer and hope to get another 200 or so before I go back to work. If I don't make it as long as I hope BF, I hope to have enough stored to last awhile. If I was a SAHM, I'd definately go a year.
  • My goal is 6 months. I go back to work when she is 4 1/2 months old so hopefully I will be able to pump with no problems after that point.
  • I BF DD1 for 2 years and I plan on doing the same with DD2. I say 6 months is great, but if you can go up to a year it's even better. They benefit from it!!!

We're off to a rough start but honestly, it hasn't even occurred to me to quit, I want this for her so much.
