I saw a lady at the grocery this morning, and she had her baby

In her cart, in the normal way.

Except.....It was a doll.

I glanced, obviously, because I'm a mom and I look at children, and then glanced again when the "toddler" didn't move, and finally stopped in the middle of the aisle to stare.

I have no idea of the brand, but the doll looked nearly real at first glance, hence the multiple glances.

The woman was about 45, but who cares about the age.  She had a DOLL in her grocery cart like it was her kid.

I tried to take a picture for you all, and facebook, and my blog, and everyone else in the world, but I didn't want to be rude and get caught.

It had to be the weirdest thing I've seen IRL in that vein.

  • Was it one of those fake ones that you carry around in high school to teach you not to get knocked up?

Although 45 seems a bit old to do that...

  • Hmm

not sure what to say about that.  she wasn't talking to it, was she?

  • I saw a show about that once. There are people out there that buy these really expensive baby dolls that look like real babies and carry them around.  They treat them like real children and push them in stroller and carts ect.. Strange IMO..
  • My MIL has this toddler sized boy doll who leans against the wall with his forehead. She used to take it with her to SIL's house for holidays b/c she thinks he is the most 'precious thing ever'. Has not done it in a few years though. She also has at least one crib full of random old ratty dolls. Don't think she has taken any to the grocery store though....
  • It was extremely odd.  That doesn't even describe the situation adequately.  It was effed up.

No, no talking.  But it was dressed and sitting there.... That'll eff you up, seeing something like that.

And COME ON!  This is totally a 5 star post.  When's the last time you saw a grown woman pushing a doll in a grocery cart?

  • Did it look like this.  Creepy.  I have heard of this before.  Some are thousands of dollars.
  • Come to Burlington, VT and you can see a transvestite pushing his fake baby in a stroller almost any day of the week.
  • JOE, yes, but it was older.

I can't believe I just said "older" in reference to a doll.

  • Was it at all possible that she had an older child with her whose doll that was and maybe she ran off to grab something leaving the mother of the girl to look like a complete wackadoo pushing around the fake toddler doll?

As creepy and strange as it looks/sounds to carry around a fake baby that looks extremely real (wow, those dolls are amazing..I just wouldnt be playing house with one as a grown woman) maybe she was never able to have children and went a bit over board in wanting one.  Cant have your own or adopt?  Just buy a fake one.

Still strange though.  Just dont want to be too harsh on the poor woman.  At least she wasnt talking to it.

A friend of mine had a cat whos kittens all died.  She then adopted 3 socks and carried them around like her kittens.  She would lick them, and sleep next to them like she was nursing them.  Sad.

Maybe something similar happened to this lady.

Still strange.  And yes, I know there really are people who do this for the heck of it.  You never know though.

I wonder what she tells people when they ask about her "baby" because you know people in general usually ask about babies.

I saw this show too. It was creepy the way these women were falling all over their "babies"/dolls. I think in the same show they discussed extended BF'ing too (like into elementary school aged children).

  • Another possibility- in high school my Mom "babysat" my BF's "real doll" that he was supposed to be watching for Home Ec class. She watched the doll at our homecoming dance- LOL.
  • Yeah, there are endless possibilites, but the most likely and probable and ACCURATE one is that the woman was nuts.  Based on the doll, the demeanor of the woman, the dress of the woman, etc.

I didn't list all of that because my opinion that she was a freak with a doll was enough and I don't have to clarify it or validate it in the OP.  My assessment should be enough.

So, yeah, tons of possibilities, but none of them likely.

  • That lady sounds M-E-N-T-AL!!!!!
  • weird.  I hope noone judged  me last week when I let Blaire take her Ariel Baby and her doll carseat into the store.  Natalie didn't go and Blaire figured out real fast that our new minivan had room for her doll carseat.  She wanted it up on the top of the cart, just like we used to do with Natalie.

difference was... I had a 3yo with me and people were grinning at her, not snickering at me, I thinkEmbarrassed

I am lol so hard...this is awesome.

But seriously to the OP pretty funny too.  I mean weird of course...but I can picture this whole scene in my head and it's pretty funny.  I wonder what her situation/story was....
