Are you guys deciding what to call the grandparents, or are they choosing their own terminology? (or are their old siblings who already established this?)
I liked the idea of everyone having their own name- and with my family my sister has already established this, since her kids are 6 and 4. My mom and step-dad are grandma and grandpa, and my dad is papa.
Now my MIL and step-FIL want to be Oma and Opa. (German for grandma and grandpa) and I am not a fan....
Just curious how everone else is tackling this!
Re: Grandparent names
His parents are grandma and grandpa and they've already been using it with SIL's daughter.
My parents are more complicated. My dad goes by the word for grandfather in his native language. My mom didn't like any word for "grandma" because it made her feel old so she wanted to go by "Madea" - taken from Tyler Perry. As in, the 6 foot tall, gun-toting cross-dressed grandma. No, I'm not kidding.
My sister did not approve. (I find it pretty hilarious.) My nephew ended up saying "Dea" and that has stuck. The funniest part is that all the kids in the neighborhood call her Dea now too.
We will stick with what my niece calls the grandparents on DH's side. We have Nannie and Grandpa for the grandparents. and G-G Maw and grandpa again for the greats.
My mom says the baby has to come up with his/her own name for them. It's whatever the baby wants. So she says. I know more words than the baby...LOL!
DH's parents will prob be Nana and Papa, established by DH's nieces.
My grandparents will prob be Grandma and Grandpa, since that's what I already call them.
My mom and dad can figure something out, since this will be their first grandchild.
We also have close family friends, like friends' parents, who will be called something like "Nana Judy" or "Papa Tom."
SIL's FIL is treated like a member of DH's family. He's single and lives by himself, and hosts DH's family get-togethers during the summer. SIL's girls call him Pap-Pap, so our LO probably will too.
We are hoping for just straight up grandmas (3) and grandpas (2) and letting our kids develop any cutsey nicknames if needed. My niece and nephew have all grandmas and grandpas and they've come up with their own distinctions (call my s-mom grandma but refer to her as grandma with the yellow hair or grandma lastname if they need to distungush).
My SILs--who do not have kids--have come up with TERRIBLE names for my ILs. It started as a joke that has become semi-serious. DH and I just cannot handle calling my MIL 'toot-toot' so we hope to end that joke now.
My parents go by Mimi and Pop-Pop. DH's parents go by Grandma and Grandpa.
I think it's a good idea to come up with distinctive names ahead of time, rather than waiting "until the baby chooses for herself", which is what my in-laws wanted to do. Most kids aren't talking for at least a year, and it's kind of awkward to have no way to refer to them until that happens.
both sets of grandparents are pretty young (mine are 45 and 52 and hubbys are 47 and early 40s) and i know mine dont want to be grandma and grandpa or nana etc...
my parents are going to be MeMe and LoLo (filipino for grandpa, we arent filipino, but my dad's name is lou and his coworker suggested it)
and i assume hubbys mom will be Baba because they are russian but who knows, and his stepdad will probably just be vadic, no special name... who knows.
My mother wanted Grandma, my stepmother wanted Nona, my DD chose MeMa for MIL & Pop Pop for FIL. I chose Poppy for my dad since I call him Pop. He was not thrilled with it but learned to love it. My stepfather is Grandpa Ralph.
My stepMIL insisted she be called Mom Mom. This I was not too happy about but have since gotten over. We are not a fan of hers.
Ughh this is drama-rama for us right now. My mom's mom was Mom Mom to us....so it is very important to her to be Mom Mom. Okay, fine. FIL really wants to be Pop Pop. Okay, fine. Then DH's younger brother had a baby and MIL and FIL are called Mom Mom and Pop Pop by my neice.
Sooo my mom is like too bad, I'm still Mom Mom, while my Dad doesn't care what he is called. So it looks like my Mom = Mom Mom, my Dad = ? maybe Pop?, FIL = Pop Pop and MIL = ??? . It just looks like our baby and my neice will call MIL different names. In the end, it probably doesn't really matter because our baby will be spending more time with my parents anyway. I just hate dealing with stubborn people.
My sisters in-laws INSISTED they be called Oma and Opa and they aren't even German. I am not a big fan of it either!! My sisters little girl, she is 2, already established Nauni(na-nee) and Pops for my parents. My MIL wants to be called Grammy and FIL Poppy.
They are the ones that have to live with it I guess, so whatever they want to be called is okay with me. As long as it's not mom or dad or anything near it!
Well I think it's up to them really, and they should be called what they prefer.
In my case, I'm the youngest child. One of my brothers has 5 children. The other has twins and a stepdaughter. So LO is #9!
My parents are Grandmother (oh yes, proper with the capital G, lol. Mom insisted on this when my first niece was born!) and Papa. I don't know what MIL wants to be, I think she may just be Grandma , which is fine.
I assume FIL will be Grandpa, and his wife may be Grandma Firstname, to differentiate her from MIL. Not sure...but they aren't going to be very involved anyway, so I am not too worried about it.
I just realized I have no clue who MIL's live in partner will be...I guess he'll probably just want to be Larry. lol.
So pretty much your whole post made me laugh...but I do love that your FIL will probably be Papa Bob, because that is the name of my favorite local BBQ joint here.
My ILs would like to be called YaYa and Poppy. This is their first grandchild, and they are so excited. They can be called whatever they want. It's fine with me.
My mom is Grandma FirstName, since that's what my niece and nephew call her.
My niece was born when my mom was 50, and she felt like she was much too young to be a grandmother, so she decided to go by Di-Di, a variation of Di, which is what most people close to her call her (short for Diana). My niece calls my father Pop or Papa because that's what we all (his children) called him growing up. I find it kind of cute that my now 10-year-old niece has shortened Di-Di to "Di" because it's kind of like they're just old pals.
The in-laws names have really been established by the nieces. MIL is "Granny" and FIL is "Grandpapa" (the nieces are bilingual French/English).
My mom will be "Gramma".
