I wanted to use cloth diapers, but Josh is pretty much against it. I'm going to stay home with the baby for about 2 months, so I think I could give it a shot and say, "See how much money we saved?!" So, I've been looking at cloth diapers this afternoon, and would sort of like to buy a set of something to use when the baby comes to see if I like it. Then, if it doesn't work for us (read: Josh complains too much) I'll not have too much invested.
I found this online https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4060012. Do you girls think I would have enough to try it out, or would I need more than the set includes ("The one-size cover and prefold adjusts to grow along with your little one. Full kit includes 12 one-size prefolds and 3 one-size covers.") Down in the reviews someone says it's too bulky etc. to use, but I also get from that review that the person just hated it in general.
Any opinions on this set from you CDing mommas? Is it a good purchase you think, or not? I figure if I like CDing and want to do it for the long haul, I could buy better stuff later on after making that call.
Re: Cloth diapers?
If you want to try them out without investing hardly anything I would recommend getting a Trial Pack from a place like Jillian's Drawers. Then you can try different kinds without a huge investment. If you don't like them you can just return them- no problem! Then if you find something you like you can do your investment then and get more of just the ones you're interested in
Those diapers are OK, but honestly you may not like them as much as some other kinds of diapers (they aren't as "easy" or cute). AIOs and Pocket Diapers are the easiest and most daddy-friendly so you may want to look into those.
Also depending on where you live there are some cloth diaper communities that will show you what the different diapers are like so you can make an educated decision on the kinds of diapers you choose.
Definitely go for the trial pack pp listed if you really want to give it a shot. I also know some moms who CD and have a pack of disposables for when Daddy is in charge.
I would look into your daycare situation, however, because it has been VERY difficult for a friend of mine to find a daycare that will accept a baby in CD's. They just don't want to deal with rinsing and storing them. Just something else to think about. Hopefully you won't have that problem. :-)
I don't think my DH has ever changed a diaper in his life... and this will be our second child. He was still kinda weird when I said I wanted to use cloth diapers. Then I did all the research and showed him that along with the cost comparison. After that his attitude totally changed and he is bragging to people that I am going to cloth diaper.
I was looking at doing a trial, and there are lots out there. I would recommend looking into one, Jillian's Drawers has a great one. I finally decided to rent Kissaluv's from Nell's Natural Baby and buy some Thirsties covers to go over them. I thought it might make it easier and I might actually get my DH to change a diaper this time. (To be fair he wasn't around much due to his jobs).
I know that in Illinois, daycare has to allow it if you have a doctor's note. There are lots of laws like this that even the daycares aren't aware of, sadly.
Chosen- is your friend also here in IL? I can get an electronic copy of that if you'd like!!!
I don't understand what the difference is between putting a 'sposie in a garbage bag vs. putting a CD in a bag for the parents to take home. Stupid rules!
Yes, they live in Illinois but she is now thinking of doing the daycare in WI, since that's where she works. I have a handful of friends in other states as well who had to fight like you wouldn't believe to get the daycares to accept the CD's. They say they don't have time to rinse them with all the kids, and they don't want the health risk/odor to be sitting around all day long. My friend in Texas ended up not going back to work because of it, so now she has her own online business selling custom soakers and woolies. She's actually making more now than when she was working at her former job!
I knew we could't CD because we live in an apartment and have assigned laundry day only once a week so it wouldn't have worked for us. I REALLY wanted to, though, and it bothers me when people are so uptight about Cd'ing.
The DC shouldn't have to rinse the CD. They should just have to drop them in a wet bag, provided by the parents, and that's all.
And, there shouldn't be any more odor from the CD than the disposable diapers.
I know a lot of people who struggle with the whole Day Care thing. I think the best way to go about it is change a CD in front of the Day Care. Show them that they do nothing different other than put the dirty diaper (poop and all, you can rinse yourself at home) into a wet bag and zip it up. No biggie, especially with an older child who only poops 1-2 times a day.
Does she have a website? I'd love to check out her company!
Oh, and I just happen to have my first Cloth Diaper giveaway on my blog if anyone wants a chance to win a free one.
It's for a Kissaluvs OS Fitted diaper. I'm having another CD giveaway in a couple of weeks and hopefully more this fall.
