Tantrums at 14 months?

Over the past few days, D has thrown 2 crying fits/tantrums where nothing we do can calm him down. He walks around crying and ends up in a corner in his room. Is it normal to have tantrums this young? Anyone else have experience with this? It's just really freaking me out because he's such a happy baby.

  • When we were at DD's 1 year well check, the pedi told us to be expecting tantrums. Most of hers came from not being able to express what she wanted or not getting what she wanted!

  • Completely normal.  Layna started having tantrums before a year old.  Typical toddler stuff.  I just leave her alone until she calms down.

  • Normal. Caroline started around 13 months...I don't think we'll see the end to them for a few years.

We actually had to walk out of a store and leave a cart of stuff the other day for the first time. She threw a fit because we wouldn't let her run around and take everything off the shelves. She screamed, went limp, etc. This definitely takes parenting to a whole new level!
  • Ditto the pp, L has been doing this since about 12 months!  We have started with time outs (about 20 sec, haha) and it has been working.  He was hitting us for awhile and he doesn't do that anymore.  We usually just put him in the corner and hold him there for about 10-20 sec each time.

    Good luck!

HA! As the mother of a 7 year old girl I can confirm your suspicions. Can you say Drama Queen? It's my punishment for disliking the "drama queens" so much in HS.

    Haha..great.
  • Luke, who is usually such a content little guy, has become a tantrum-throwing beast lately.  We're trying to wean from bottles, and he is NOT happy about it.  It's pretty impressive.  I don't know how to handle them yet.  So, yeah, I'd say it's normal.  He had his first one about a month ago and has had several over the last few days.  It's awesome.
