Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Did you give Tylenol before LO's 2 month shots?

I have DD's dr. appt this afternoon.  I've heard about giving a little Tylenol about a half hour before to help with the shots.  Did anyone do this?  I don't think I did with DD1's 2 month but maybe her 4 month.  She never was really bothered too badly by them though so I never really gave her much after that.

  • I waited until after her shots to give her Tylenol. She was running a slight fever and I didn't want her to feel crappy. Some babies don't feel bad after their vaccinations, so IMO, I would wait until after to see how LO is doing.
  • Pedi told us to wait until after so that they could give us the correct dosage based on weight.  I think the dosage changes around 12 pounds.  DS ran a fever afterwards and his legs were swollen and sore.  We did Tylenol for a day and half afterwards every 4-5 hours until the fever was gone and he was feeling better.
  • No, but I gave him two doses afterwards because his legs were swollen and you could tell they were hurting him. By that night, he was fine. Good luck with your LO!
  • Nope, I just nursed immediately afterwards for both of her shots (2 and 4 month) and she didn't need the tylenol either time.

  • Before and after. Pedi was fine with it and advised on the dosage.

  • No.  All babies react differently so you'll want to see how he reacts first.  I gave my ds a bottle right away after he had them (while still at the pedi's office) to comfort him and then when I put him in his carseat he fell asleep for almost 3 hours and was fine the rest of the day. He slept 10 hrs that night, and was a bit fussy the next day but nothing too crazy.  He never got a temperature so there was no need for tylenol.

  • Pedi told us not to give any Tylenol beforehand - said that there are studies that show giving Tylenol beforehand can weaken the effects of the vaccine. Also, we had to get the dosage based off of LO's weight.
  • I didn't give it to her before b/c I didn't know how she'd react.  Immediately after she was fine and went down for a super long nap.  After that though, she was really fussy and uncomfortable.  You could tell her legs were sore.  We gave her Tylenol after that.

**We also split up her vaccines.  That day she only got the Hib and pneumococcal.  I think the Hib is what made her leg sore.  The next week she got the DTaP, Hep B, and polio, and she was completely fine after that, no Tylenol needed.**
