Since DH gets home after 7:30 pm most days, I try to do dinner before 6 pm. They immediately go into the bathtub afterwards and I breathe a sigh of relief once their pjs are on.
we try to eat between 6 and 6:30 but there are some nights that we don't eat until 7 or 7:30 depending on what we have going on. my LO is fine if we have to wait. i just give him a snack if i know it's going to be around 7 or so when we eat.
We're looking to join the Y so I can workout but it would mean that the kids and I would get home from there around 7. DH would get home around 6-6:30 and has offered to cook dinner every night if I will go. That would mean we would eat between 7-7:30 and I was worried that was too late for the girls. I feel like as soon as dinner was over they would have to take a bath and go to bed and there would be no down time after dinner. DH isn't concerned.
For DS, he has to have some downtime/playtime after dinner. Our routine includes either playing or watching a video between dinner and bedtime. If you think your girls can handle not having the downtime, then I wouldn't see it as a problem.
Could another option be for you to exercise between dinner and bedtime, and leave the kids with DH for playing and bath? We do this at our house during the school year sometimes. I'll leave to go exercise after dinner, around 7-7:30pm, and DH will take care of dinner cleanup and giving DS a bath.
Dinner time is one of the things that makes it hard for us. We usually eat about 7 - but if we go to the gym before dinner I would need to make sure we're having leftovers every night. It would leave no time to actually cook.
Maybe start off trying to go 2-3 nights each week.
I can say that my godson and his mom go to the gym quite often. He's 3 and he LOVES the kids club. They are at Lifetime Fitness in Kingwood - it is pricey, but she said it's worth it. J even gets in the car and asks to go to the gym because they have classes for him and he loves the play area. She does hate that she can't really spend as much time with him on those days, but it makes her feel better about herself, he enjoys going and it's not every single night.
Do something for yourself! The girls may end up loving it and you can set a good healthy example for them! :-)

Ditto this. F loves going to the play area at 24 Hour Fitness, which is free with my whopping $12.50/month membership.
As long as you can strategize quick fix meals on the nights you go to the gym, I would do it.
If Dh can make it home before 6:00 I try to hold off until then, but he's usually much later. I feed the kids just after 5:00. Lila goes to bed at 7:15. By 5:00 they are ready for dinner even if they have had tons of snacks....
