Anyone currently doing or have done a gluten-free pregnancy (no wheat, rye, barley or oat products)? I have Celiac Disease, so I cannot have any gluten products. I also cannot have straight milk due to a sensitivity, but can tolerate some dairy products.
Any suggestions? I have been taking a prenatal vitamin for several years. But curious how you got your balanced diet in and if it was a challenge for you. TIA!
Re: Gluten-Free Pregnancy
I've been gluten free for about 9 years now. Because I have been gluten free for so long I'm not really needing to change anything about my diet. Like you, I don't drink milk and I stay away from dairy but can tolerate a bit of it here and there.
Because I don't consume dairy regularily, I am also taking a calcium supplement in addition to prenatal vitamins. Along with the calcium I am taking Vitamin d. Apparently vit d helps the calcium get to the right places in your body rather than settling in places where it cannot be used effectively. At least that's how Doctor Oz explained it! lol!
Since going gluten free I have also cut out things like vinegar, MSG, sulphites, preservatives, caffeine, refined sugars, and more. I find that these are all things that bother my guts so I just stay away. That has made the transition to a pregnancy diet pretty easy. All the things that my doctor told me to stay away from are things that I wouldn't consume anyways.
I would say that since going gluten free I eat much healthier that I would be so it has not been a challenge to eat a balanced diet now that I am pregnant. Of course I could stand to eat more fresh fruits and vegetebles but those are all safe so I generally do eat quite a few of them anyways.
Have you been GF for a while? Are you struggling to stick to the GF diet?
I don't have celiac disease, but my mom does. I had the stomach flu when I was about 14 weeks along and my mom came over to take care of me and DD while my husband was out of town. She had some Gluteno pretzels and they were about the only thing I could eat for a couple of days. You might want to try them if you haven't already. I thought they tasted just like regular pretzels.
I have celiac disease as well, and have been GF for both pregnancies. I honestly dont find it all that difficult to keep a balanced diet, since I feel by avoiding most things processed my diet is much healthier than the general population. I would die without betty crocker GF brownies. lol. I got lactose intolerance weirdly enough in 1st tri with both pregnancies, and lactaid milk doesnt taste that bad and has double the calcium. I drank that a lot to help with that. Someone suggested trader joes and they have a lot of great products. I like their mac and cheese when Im lazy and need something easy. Udi's bread is also excellent and the best GF bread I found-not sure if its carried in your area but its something to look for.
In terms of your pregnancy, make sure your dr is aware of your disease so he/she can be in contact with your GI specialist should anything arise. I had to have an extra ultrasound at 32 weeks with my DS since celiac babies tend to have issues with low birth weight. I didnt have that issue and my DS was 10lbs!
Awesome, Ladies! I've been GF since 2004 and I've been strict with it every since. I think if I encounter morning sickness, I'm going to try Corn Chex. They are kind of bland and crunchy - I think it will help, but we'll see. Also, I thought about the pretzels - they are expensive, but so good (the Glutino brand)!!
I'm excited to take this journey. Thanks for all the feedback!
