Almost chewed my FIL's head off! re: unsolicited advice

Ugh- I swear- this man can really get under my skin like no one else can. I think the thing that really bothers me the most is that he is constantly flapping his jaw about things he has NO CLUE about.

We call FIL every Sunday night so Gisele can talk to him-

every week he bust our balls that Gisele isn't night time potty trained yet. Ummm HELLO she is 26 months old. Gisele has been daytrained since she was about 20 months- where she will ask to go to the potty each time (which is WAY early- but she did it on her own)- If she wasn't the one showing so much interest in the potty I would have never started that soon. plain and simple.

I told him tonight- that i would appreciate that he doesn't bring up PT'ing anymore with us on the phone. The entire subject is just off the table. I am so sick of addressing it every week because the man is CLEARLY clueless and I just do not have the patience to deal with it anymore.

  • I'm amazed that a man has any interest in potty training talk.   I would just pretend he didn't even say anything and change the subject.  You're on the phone so it's easy to ignore something that is said and to quickly change the subject.

  • trust me- i have ignored it for the last 2 months of Sundays. He isn't giving up. I needed to just squash it.

  • That's annoying. Good for you for telling him to can it. People keep asking me if DD is using the potty and she's not, then I get side eyed. I can't force her to pee on command.

I love your new siggy pic! She's so cute.

  • Wow, he sounds like my dad. He keeps asking if we have started potty training Ian yet who is only 18 months and a boy. I told him I will tell him when we begin otherwise please don't bring it up.
  • Good for your for squashing the subject and being direct with him about it.

  • You should tell him that if he's so concerned about it, he should feel free to come over every single night and work with her on getting her night time trained.  I bet that would shut him up.   :)
  • that is nuts!  It seems most people I know have a potty training goal of being trained by 3years old!  Mostly everyone I know has boys though.
  • Why does he care so much?  I know children who are 4 are not fully night trained yet.  Regardless, SO none of his business and I am sure I would have totally chewed him out too.  Does Gisele hear him saying those things?  Because that would beyond tick me off.

  • Man he would have a field day with my almost 4 year old who is nowhere near night trained, she has been potty trained since 22 months, and i don't see night training coming anytime soon.
  • Annoying, but can't you just say "thanks" and change the subject?  IMO it's just not worth it to argue differences of opinions with the ils, as they tend to be set in their ways.  I normally just say "hmmm....thanks.  I might consider it."  Then I change the subject and just resume doing things my way.
  • That is so annoying. I hate when people keep giving advice and why does a grandpa care so much if she is nighttime trained or not. He is not dealing with it. She did awesome to potty train so early and easily!!!

FWIW, DS was daytime potty trained at 23 months and is still wearing a diaper at night at almost 3.5yrs and wakes up wet most mornings. I am sure your FIL would love that. :) DD who potty trained at 20 months is dry way more often in the morning than DS...every child is different.

No she doesn't hear that because FIL refuses to speak to us in English (French speaking)- he will talk to Gisele in English- but is always on our case if we are teaching her french or not. But that is a whole nother ball of wax.
