DS stops breathing after he coughs (XP)

J and C are lying down for a nap while I'm trying to get some work done.  H noticed that after C coughs (usually 3 coughs in a row) he stops breathing for 3-5 seconds before taking a deep breath and going back to his normal rhythm.  H picked him up and is holding him asleep sitting up and it's better, but he still stops breathing for a few seconds.

He's had a cold for the past few days - lots of snot, coughs and sneezes.  We haven't noticed the no breathing, but he sleeps in his crib so we have no way of knowing.

Is this normal?  Or should I call the pedi?  I don't want to be overly paranoid, but I also don't know if I can sleep tonight without knowing this is just a normal thing...

    To add...I wonder if I should give him some cough medicine?  Of course the pedi will say no, but...

    No cough medicine (at least, I wouldn't do it.)

    If his lips, tongue, mouth area aren't turning blue, he's okay.  If it lasts for more like ten to thirty seconds, then I'd be worried.  It sounds like it's just taking him a minute to catch his breath.

    agreed. i would not give him cough syrup under any circumstances.

    both my kids had this kind of couple second delay. i think it's pretty common. call your pedi tomorrow but, again, i think its on the normal side

    Evan has had a cold for the past week and he does this too. He coughed like this at the doctor's office and they weren't alarmed. I think you are fine, but a call to the Pedi's in the morning couldn't hurt if you are still worried.

    Dx: PCOS and short luteal phase
    18 cycles (3 with our RE) - Metformin + Clomid + HCG booster did the trick!

    I always check with the doc before doing cough/benadryl/stuff like that. She has always recommended benadryl in certain circumstances, but I've never done it without her go-ahead. (never cough medicine)

    This is an outside chance, but maybe you're experiencing what we have?Our second son has a condition called Laryngomalacia or a floppy larynx. This causes him to present the following symptoms (a strider is like a wheezing intake of air like someone catching his breath; this is very alarming and seems like he cannot breathe; when he has any congestion, it sounds much worse):

    Infants with laryngomalacia have intermittent noisy breathing when breathing in (inspiratory stridor) becomes worse with agitation, crying, excitement, feeding or position / sleeping in the supine (on the back) position. These symptoms are often present at birth and are usually apparent within the first 10 days of life. However, noisy breathing (stridor) of infantile laryngomalacia may be present in babies up to one year of age.

    I don't see what the harm would be to call the pedi now and let them know.  I rather be a paranoid parent that can release the anxiety on the doctor and get reassurance than to sit around all night paranoid.  My pedi is far from hating me from all the calls I make...considering that I bring in a lot of new patients to her. 

    And I wouldn't do any cough medicine especially since he's so young.  Emmy is over 3 and the Dr still forbids it even though she's 41 lbs!  However, my Dr gave the okay for once a day (at night time) for 1/2 tsp of Benadryl for Ally at 17 lbs.  So your pedi may say the same for you...it'll help a lot of congestion.  Baby vicks also does wonders...

    We didn't do the medicine, obviously. I called and the first nurse was trying to get out the door. The weekend clinic was closing in 5 min and after I gave her the symptoms she told me to go to the ER. We debated. But I had gotten a vibe from her that she wanted to go, but wanted to save her liability by telling me to go to the ER. We called back and got the on call RN who J talked to for a while. She wasn't worried about the delay in breathing but was worried about the rattle and crackle in his chest. She suggested some things to clear him up and we are going to take him in tomorrow. Thanks...I do feel a little better. I can say its possible he's been doing this for ages and we don't know because we don't co-sleep.
