big kid beds?

We are not planning to purchase another crib for the deuce, so we will need to transition Jocelyn to a big girl bed as she approaches 2 years old. If at all possible, we would like to avoid buying a "toddler" bed since we prefer to spend our money on something we can use long-term. I'm wondering if this is practical and can be done safely? I've been looking at daybeds since that style would work well in her new room, and by design has "rails" on three sides, but I don't know if we can realistically make it safe enough with a rail on the open side. Anyone have experience with using an "adult" bed, either daybed or regular style, for a toddler?

Re: big kid beds?

  • We tried the daybed option for DS but the one we had was really high so he had to use a step stool to climb in. (we also used a rail to keep him safe) Right now he's happy as a clam because we ordered him a new bed and it was back ordered so we got the full size mattress and box springs and set it on the floor. "I can get in!" he said - so we have suspended our search for a frame etc for now. (and canceled that order that was still "on it's way" after 8 weeks!)

A note: You could do this and still use a rail and a wall to keep her in bed - or 2 rails.

We have a daybed in DS's room but he is still in his crib.  I plan to keep him in it as long as possible since the few times we've had him sleep in the daybed (when he has been sick and one of us sleeps with him) he keeps getting something stuck through the bars of the daybed (arm, leg, head, etc.).  It's just not set up for little ones.  You might want to do the "pop-can" test on the rails of the daybeds you're considering.  We should have.

Oh yes I forgot about that - we draped a quilt over the bars and he put his stuffed animals in front of it to avoid that - and avoid banging on the hard metal. (but DS was probably 3 when we did this)

  • DD has a full size bed. Both she and I/DH love it. It's kinda higher up, so she has a step stool to get up and down. For a while, we had a bed rail on one side, but took it down after seeing that she didn't sleep near the edge (there is also a head board, foot board, and one side is against a wall).

I like it because there is enough room in there for DH and I to stay with her if need be. We put her in there at 17 mos. We had minimal problems with her getting up and leaving her room or doing other things. If she got in the habit of leaving her room, we just put a child proof lock on her door, so she couldn't get out unless we opened it. We took it off when she stopped trying and everything is fine now and has been for a long time.  One problem we ran into last month though, was she would pull her dresser drawers out - obviously a huge problem. We just talked to her about how dangerous it is to do that and she hasn't done it again.

I remember I was very nervous about making this transition, but it's really nothing in hind-sight. Just have to teach them how to be safe about it and they'll learn.

  • We are going through the same thing.  I don't want to buy another crib for #2.  Our crib bedroom set is cherry and I wanted to get a white/off white bedroom set for Hailey that she can hopefully keep for a long time.  I definitely want to get a full size bed with a trundle just cause I think they're cool.  Plus it will be nice to have a second bed for sleepovers and stuff in the future.  I don't know if she'll even be ready for the big girl bed by the time #2 is here either, so having that lower trundle will be nice I think.

This is the set we're probably going to buy:  https://tinyurl.com/26b8yqk

  • Thanks for all the input! I actually had the same brainstorm last night about the trundle bed since we were looking at styles with those as well - don't know why I didn't think of that before. Now I just have to decide daybed vs. regular bed - the one mcwifey posted is so cute!

  • We transitioned Haley to a twin bed.  We put it up against the wall, so it really only had 1 side too.  We opted to try it without a rail and she only fell out twice (I felt terrible). BUT - we padded the floor with blankets and pillows for a few weeks, so those broke her fall.  It wasn't very high up either.  She learned REALLY quick how to sleep in the twin. We were in the same position and didn't want to buy a toddler bed to only use it for a short period of time.  She was two and 4 months when we transitioned, so I think she was ready for the change.  I say - go with the twin bed or daybed.  I bet Jocelyn will take to it quickly.  Also, you can buy the extra long bed rail that goes the full length of the bed to make you feel better about her safety.  Then, when she gets used to the bed, you can take the rail off.  We're really happy to have Haley in the twin bed and she LOVES it now!
