So, I've been trying to filter through all the CD posts and get some ideas of where to start, what to get, and all that jazz. As most everyone says when starting...it's SO overwhelming. So I figured I would just ask some questions and see if I could get direct answers.
1. What exactly should I get to start? PFs, AIOs, Fitteds, Pockets? How many of each thing? I would like to be able to have enough to do laundry once every 2 days or so. I think I want to start with a small stash that we can work with for the first few months to make sure that we want to do CD. I'm completely sold on it, but DH is still skeptical.
2. Because DH is skeptical, I he might be more hesitant towards PFs. I think what I've gathered from the boards is that PF are easier for newborns, but I would like to be able to have a couple AIOs for when we go out or when baby is with DH. I think I could get him to come around, but it may take time.
3. What websites do you buy your CD and supplies from? I've visited several, but wasn't sure if there was a specific site where there are lots of good deals?
4. What kind of detergent do you use? I have regular top loading machines, and people have suggested all different detergents. What's best for getting out stains, and being gentle for baby?
I guess I will wait for answers to see if I have any follow-up questions. I would love just a rundown of what worked for current CD mommies and what to-be CD mommies have acquired! Basically, I need a list! hehe
TIA everyone!
Re: Hopping on the CD train with lots of questions!
I think people have different opinions on these things, but here's my 2 cents:
1. What exactly should I get to start? I got a variety and I use them all. I do laundry every 4 days. We have 24 prefolds, 3-4 covers, 3-4 AIOs for each size, and 6 bum genius pockets (bought 12 but have only used 6 so far).
2. Because DH is skeptical, I he might be more hesitant towards PFs. DH and I watched YouTube videos about using prefolds and snappis. They looked so easy, he was right on board and still is!
3. What websites do you buy your CD and supplies from? I used Momsmilkboutique and DiaperDaisy. Both sold pre-loved supplies -- I got AIOs and a few covers in EUC. Check diaperpin.com for deals, too.
4. What kind of detergent do you use? I use Charlie's Soap and line dry in the sun. Works wonders!
ETA: We're still using our 24 infant sized prefolds. I just purchased 24 premium sized ones so we're ready when he needs to transition. (There are all sorts of in-between sizes, but they confused me and I was cheap, so we just went the two-step route: infant and premium.)
1. What exactly should I get to start? mix of prefolds + covers and pockets and some all in ones.
for the newborn age we used orange edge green mountain prefolds and thirsties covers. I also had some fitteds. didn't have the kissaluv 0 love like everyone else but really liked the green sprouts.
after Jack was 12 lbs or so we switched to rotating in pocket diapers (bum genius) and the bum genius organic all in ones. about this time we switched to yellow edge prefolds too.
He has a stash of 8 diapers at daycare (MORE than enough considering they change him every 2 hours + when needed so he usually goes through 4-5 in a 7 hour day) that I make sure to replenish daily. We use prefolds all other times and use a thick fitted + cover for nighttime.
2. Because DH is skeptical, I he might be more hesitant towards PFs. I understand! DH can't do snappis. i'm sure he doesn't try very hard but no matter - we have plenty of other ones so I didn't push the subject. plus MIL was jack's caregiver when I went back to work and she wasn't very supportive so it was nice to show her the pockets and say too bad - make it work these "look" just like a disposable so you will be able to figure it out.
3. What websites do you buy your CD and supplies from? I bought a lot locally. PFs came from green mountain diapers and other stuff came from abbyslane, momsmilk, and kellyscloset
4. What kind of detergent do you use? I use planet - seems to work well with my water and wash routine. I don't worry about stains but they come out in sunlight when I am able to do that.
I'm trying to remember how many of each diaper we have.
Newborn:
18 prefolds
3 xs bum genius all in one (DH picked them out from the local store)
6 green sprouts fitteds
1 bummis cover, 1 prorap (too small on him at birth/9lb) and 4 thirsties covers. i appreciated having 6 because he got poop on them all the time and I rarely rinsed and re-used I usually just threw the whole mess in the pail but it's not necessary.
and then i also had ~ 10 Kissaluvs and swaddlebees fitteds that we didn't use and have since sold.
Now:
~ 15 Bum Genius pockets
15 prefolds
8 bum genius all in ones
4 misc. pockets (swaddlebees and thirsties)
5 gro baby (gro via) shells + soakers
5 nice fitteds
hemp inserts for extra nighttime absorbancy
4 thirsties duo size 2 covers
** this is way more than you need. I do laundry about every 3 day and never worry about running out. even if MIL wasn't supportive of cloth she does like to shop so she went to the local store and bought about 2-3 diapers every week she was here
also bought fuzzi bunz to start but they didn't work for us so i sold them.
We have 10 Bum Genious 3.0. We didn't start using them until Ryan was 10-11 pounds and by that time he was already going less so ten worked for us. We usually have 2-3 left by the end of the night. We use disposables at night, at day care and when we're going to be out for awhile. I wash every night, which doesn't bother me. What does bother me is stuffing the insert into the diaper. Four months of doing that and I've had enough, I'm finally ready to venture out and try some other kind. Your post will be helpful to me too! I'm going to you tube after this post and watch about PFs. I hear those old fashioned originals are the favorites among CD mama's, & they are much cheaper ($15-17 each for BG, the reason we only have 10).
Bum Genious might be perfect to win ur DH over.

You might consider a diaper trial package to see what you like best. I knew we were gonna go the cheap and easy route so we got 3 dozen infant sized PFs and 3 Thirsties covers in size XS and S as well as one Duo Cover Size 1 and a couple of Snappis. We do laundry every other day.
We started CDing at 6 days old. She's a bigger baby (>95%) so around 8 weeks we started to transition her into Premium Sized PFs and Thirsties Duo 2 Covers. Around that time we also got a couple of Thirsties Duo Diapers (pockets) for overnights. We add in an extra hemp liner and she's good to go. Super easy and fairly cheap way to diaper. FWIW, DH is way more comfortable using the PF+Cover than the pocket dipes. Not sure why...maybe because he started with PF+Cover and it's more comfortable for him. And he does the majority of the diaper laundry (because he's home during the day) and thinks it is no sweat. I fold and put them away, etc.

Try a diaper trial...see my posts on Pregosaur.com about your options.

I get most of my stuff from momsmilkboutique.com and love their customer service. They have sales and coupons often. I got some stuff from cottonbabies.com
4. What kind of detergent do you use? I have regular top loading machines, and people have suggested all different detergents. What's best for getting out stains, and being gentle for baby?
We have a front load hE machine and use 7th Generation Delicate Care on our diapers. We've had no stink or staining issues and if we ever do have stains (we had some when we used ColicCalm which has activated charcoal in it) they sunned out in one day.

Our stash:
1) 3 dozen unbleached Indian Cotton Prefolds (in infant and premium sizes)
2) 3 Thirsties Covers in size XS, S; 1 Duo Cover size 1 and 6 Duo Covers size 2. 4 Duo Diapers with additional hemp inserts. 1 Bummis Cover and 1 Fuzzin Bunz One Size Pocket (both were gifts and we don't really use either of them)
3) 48 organic bamboo fleece wipes
4) 1 Lionsheart wipes warmer (bought used for $6)
5) 2 WAHMIES diaper pail liners (one to use and one clean one to replace on wash days)
6) one 13 gal kitchen can as our pail ($7 Sterilte one with a top)
7) 2 smaller dry bags for the diaper bag (Bumkins)
We started ECing around 5 months old and now only use about 6 diapers/day and hardly ever have to change/wash poopy ones!

This is all so helpful! Thank you so much. It's easier for me to wrap my brain around to see what everyone used and what worked, then I can compile all your stuff and sort out what I think I might need!
DH is still unsure, but I think I just need to get him a doll to practice on! I think CD is actually going to be easier in the sense of clean-up, but he's not buying it. I guess time will tell, and we have some!
We're trying it out as well. As far as DH, I think it helped that we both went to a free CD workshop. He was able to see the CDs himself and hear from moms and husbands themselves about CDing. Try to see if they offer free workshops in your area.
