Re: what is a diaper lottery????
Basically you ask/tell/rudely suggest that each guest bring a pack of diapers to the shower in addition to a gift...and then they will get a raffle ticket to win a prize.
I personally, think this is a big no-no.

There is no difference. Many people find the book instead of card idea tacky, too.
It's not any different. it's all tacky.
A diaper lottery is a game that requires the guest to bring a pack of diapers and then they get a chance to win something (gift card, basket filled with things, etc), but if a guest doesn't bring a pack of diapers then they are not entered into the drawing.
I see three differences between a diaper lottery and bringing a book instead of a card. 1) Diapers cost a lot more than a book (a nice book can be found for $3-5, diapers not so much), 2) You can take the $ you were going to spend on a card and put it toward a book, and 3) you don't have a chance to win a prize by bringing a book. I don't mind the book one quite as much because I always include a book with a gift anyway. Most times I also wrap a pack of diapers as well.
I do agree that both border on tackiness...but if it is the norm for the mom-to-be's family and circle of friends they will expect it and it won't catch them off-guard. They probably wouldn't consider either one gift-grabby or tacky.
both are tacky IMO.
