3rd Trimester

Possible TMI: Brazilian wax, anyone?

I have never gotten a Brazilian, and really, I don't want one. But The combination of excessive hair growth + pregnancy discharge makes me VERY UNCOMFORTABLE (to say the least without going overboard on the TMI front!). I really, really, really want any and all hair to be gone...and I want it done efficiently, i.e. no shaving.

My question: Is the regrowth really terrible and even more uncomfortable? I don't care about the pain, but if I'm going to experience even more discomfort between waxes I can't handle that.

Re: Possible TMI: Brazilian wax, anyone?

  • I can't speak for a Brazilian, but I do get bikini waxes and the regrowth is actually way better than with shaving.  I now hate shaving.  It gives those red bumps and grows back itchy.  With waxing I can hardly even feel it's growing back and after a couple waxes, a good portion of the hair, at least for me, never even grew back.

Now that's not to say I reccomend a Brazilian right now for you though.  Someone posted just last week that she super regreted recently doing it because it kinda tore up her extra sensative pregnancy skin and left it very raw, red, and bleeding in some spots.  At my last bikini wax like 2 weeks ago, I even noticed for me, even though I have had bikini waxes before, that it broke a lot of blood vessels under my skin and left red streaked skin all around the area.  It took like 3 days to go away and I had to lay off wearing my bathing suit during that time.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

  • I don't think the re growth is uncomfortable, I feel like it's worse when I shave than get it waxed.  I haven't done a brazilian while pregnant but the regular bikini wax I got wasn't that much worse than pre pregnant.  Go for it!
  • I would NOT get your first brazilian when you are pregnant.  You are going to be more swollen and tender down there.  Plus, your skin is stretched, so you may end up with some tearing of skin, bleeding, etc.

Can you just do a really careful/close trim with some cheap trimmers?

  • The regrowth of waxed hair is 100% better than shaving, at least for me.  I get no ingrowns, no hair bumps, and regrowth process is a lot slower.  You cannot compare it to shaved hair at all.  I do brazilians all the time and would not do it any other way.  Just make sure that where ever you go they use good quality wax and not some cheap kind, this makes a difference especially pain wise.

  • If you have never waxed I don't know if I'd go with Brazilian for the first time.  Your skin is going to be more sensitive and I've been waxing for years and just experienced this firsthand this past week.  At 32 weeks it hurt significantly more than during the past 6 months when I have been 3-4 times before.  The only thing that got me through was knowing the end was near...and I did not get a brazilian.

The area you wax will most likely be sensitive to touch for several days.  And also with hair having different growth cycles don't be surprised if not all your hair is gone because they'll be different lengths.  Even when my lady plucked hairs from this last time there are still random short ones down there....she would have had to spend plenty of time plucking to get it all done and she's really good.
That being siad regrowth in between is not the same to me vs. when I shave.  It's not as itchy or noticeable to me personally.

Do whatever you feel is best for you though.  My docs words at my last appt were, "Please don't go get a brazilian right before delivery unless this is your normal routine."

  • I am definitely hesitant to get the first one while pregnant, but dang, I'm sick of this hair! I have been trying to do close trims with an electric razor/trimmer I have, but it's just not working. Bah! Pregnancy is so glamorous... :)
  • I wouldn't try a Brazillian for the first time while pregnant.

That said, is it possible for your DH to help you?  I know it's embarrassing, but once I got this far along, I couldn't see down there and I was much more comfortable with him doing it than me.  Who knows what I would have cut?  Yikes.

  • Yeah, he'd help and I wouldn't be embarrassed about that...I think I'm honestly just having a moment where I need all hair to be gone, now, forever. We'll see where this urge takes me!
  • I've been getting waxes this pregnancy because of the weather, bathing suits, etc...my parents have a pool and I take my toddler to swim classes, so I can't avoid being in a suit.

Honestly, I don't think there's that big a difference between getting a bikini or a full brazilian.  What the other girls said is true--it hurts more when you are pregnant, but the regrowth is better.  If you exfoliate between waxes, you won't get ingrowns, and the regrowth is softer and somewhat thinner.  That being said, my last wax at 38 weeks was torturous.

  • I've not ever been waxed. I tried to do an at-home thing, but that failed miserably!! BUT, I do shave. It's not as easy as going in and laying down on the table and letting someone else do everything, but if you trim well before and use a brand new razor it can be good for several days.

The best advice I have is go to a beauty supply store (Sally's or the like) and buy an after-wax cream or lotion or oil. It will help to keep the hair re-growth to a minimum and not itch as badly. Also, exfoliating regularly will help keep the itch down.

Also, shave in the bath tub, after at least 10 minutes of soaking. I actually will have my whole bath and then just before I'm going to get out I will sit on the edge of the tub with my new razor and shave with a mirror. That way I don't have to bend over as much to reach and I can shave everything cleanly without going over it too many times and causing irritation.

I do have to shave every couple of days, but it's a great excuse to take a nice relaxing bath!!

  • I got a brazilian at 33 weeks and it was a HUGE relief. I felt so much better to have all that hair gone. I hadn't had one previously in my pregnancy, but I didn't think it hurt too much more than when I had had them before I was pregnant. The regrowth is definitely not terrible or uncomfortable and was much better than what I've had from shaving. Plus it lasts longer!

  • I definitely do not recommend getting a wax for the first time while pregnant.  If your area down there is already irritated and sensitive you are asking for trouble.  I have been having insane itching down there saw my OB on Friday and he told me that it does look irritated but no infection and that he is going to give me a cream to help with it being so uncomfortable.  GL, I know your pain I "hate" pregnancy vag!! :)

  • i got my first ever brazilian wax when i was 27 weeks im 29 weeks now and havnt shaved once yet after that. im so glad i did it. it was very painful though but whats more painful than giving birth hahaha
  • I've had a brazilian and although painful it is definitely worth it! There is a spa in the town over from me that specializes in pregnant women though, so if you have a place like that I might try and go there.. i've read that some women with a low tolerance for pain can sometimes go into labor if they get a wax in the 3rd tri... but ask your doc, definitely more comfortable than shaving!
  • I am in the same boat as you, but I am too nervous to get the Brazilian done. So my solution was nair. It has worked well and is painless. :) Good luck I know how you feel!
  • Needless to say we're on in the same boat here...and I too have never gotten a brazilian...nor a wax (except for facial hair).  I want to get a brazilian SO BAD...but I'm scared.  Haha.  I think I will go for it, but only because I made a disaster out of my hair.

I bought lady trimmers and whatnot...and I tore myself up!  After a few days healing, my husband noticed my shave job and this is what he said, "Hey!  You did a very good...oh no...you are a mess!  You have patches everywhere!  And...you cut yourself?!  How do you cut yourself with trimmers that have a guard on them?"

Haha...yeah, so it's all sorts of uneven and I'm dying to get waxed, but doubt I will.

  • I have always gotten brazilians.  My last one was at 30 weeks and it was much more painful than usual - I've been getting them so long that it almost never hurts but that time it did.  I talked to the woman who always does mine at Bliss Spa and she said that I should come in for what is called an 'in-betweeny' which is in between a fll brazilian and a regular bikini wax.

Although the part that it sounds like is most uncomfortable for you (in terms of where the hair is) actually probably won't hurt that much to get waxed.  For me it was the higher (toward belly button) the hair I got waxed the more it hurt.  The places a traditional brazilian gets didn't hurt at all.

    Good luck.
