I've been working in my classroom and I'm ready for some new traditions. What are some things your child's teacher does (especially in the beginning of the year) that you love. Please
I don't know what grade you teach, but I taught kindergarten and always had them draw a picture of themselves each month and write their name. I saved all these pictures and then for Mother's day we put them together in a book. I also took their picture at the beginning of the year, and then when we made the books and I entitled it...Look How Much I've Grown.
We also had a star of the day each day. This student did the calendar, line leader, etc. The whole class would draw a picture of that student and we also put these into books and the star student got to take their pictures home. The parents loved to see how their children were represented by each student
I teach a pre-k inclusion class. I love the idea of the other kids drawing the star of the day. I do keep pictures and I used to put them in an album for each student, each year. This year, I'm doing CDs though.
Last year at my son's school, they took a picture of each kid with his/her parents. Instead of the usual nametag, they printed out the parent/child picture and laminated it with "Mommy Loves Kid'sname" on the back. They hung a string on it and the child wore it around his/her neck for the first few days. It was a cute opening day activity, and a clever way for the teachers to get to know which parent went with which child.
The teacher my son had for the past 2 years (who was also the director of the school, and one of those amazingly gifted teachers you pray your kid gets to have) started the first day with the Rosemary Wells story "The Kissing Hand".
For a few years, my kids' school has done a class "mascot" -- a stuffed animal with a journal. Each kid gets to be line leader and take the mascot home for a week. With parents' help, kids write in the journal, add pictures of what they did with the mascot, and give a report each day in circle time. On Friday, the student returns the mascot, and gets to sign his/her name on the "Author's Chair" (a wooden chair colorfully painted by the teacher) and "read" the journal to the class. The kids are totally JAZZED when it's their turn to take the stuffed animal home. At the end of year picnic, the mascots, the chairs, and the journals are auctioned off in a silent auction. Proceeds go to the school.
