Babies: 0 - 3 Months

If your child has already had his 2 month shots I need you help

My DS got his shots and had to drink that liquid stuff on Wednesday and since then he's acting like he has an upset stomach, like bad gas, when he eats. My MIL watchs him during the day while I'm working so I haven't seen how hes been acting unfortunitly except for last night and he was VERY fussy, more than normal and he is a fussy baby to start with. I accidently clipped the end of his finger last night when I was cutting his nails (you might remember my post) and I thought that he was just in pain from that this morning when he woke up screaming and I couldn't get him to calm down.

MIL told my DH that he hasn't been eatting well today and has just been very grump/fussy, and tired. And he's had horrible gas since Wednesday. Did anyone else have this problem also? I don't know if the way he is acting is related to the shots or if it could be his finger that I snipped (well besides the gas problem). MIL says it seems like it's his stomach bothering him and not the finger but they didn't warn me about the fact that he could be in pain like that when he got his shots.

  • your poor lo!

neither of my children had reactions to any of their shots..and ive never heard of gas being a side effect..but i would call your pedi just to be sure.

they do go thru a 2 months growth spurt so the fussiness may just be hunger.  also..my dd is a very gassy baby and has days where it is worse than others. have you tried to really burp him?  sometimes different burping positions work better than others.  mylicon worked wonders with both my children as well.

have you given your lo tylenol?

  • Hmmm, I am thinking the gas issue is a coincidence.  DS had his shot and rotovirus yesterday. The rotovirus is such a small amount that whatever wasn't absorbed to do it's thing has to have been eliminated by now.  We are doing Dr.Sears delayed schedule so DS only got one shot...how many did yours get.  I am thinking he is probably just fussy from the shots.  Or he could be going through a growth spurt...I know there is the "schedule" but I believe every child is a bit different and may have their spurts different weeks.  Have you tried Mylicon or Gripe Water for the gas? How about a little massage or leg crunches?

My MIL said he's not even wanting to eat... which is also what he did to me this morning when I was getting him ready before work. She said he's only eatting about 2oz every 3 hours or so and he usually takes 5oz. I gave him gas drops this morning and last night but I'm not sure if MIL has been giving him any today. I haven't actually spoke with her, just my DH and this is what he passed along. I also gave him some tylenol this morning about 4am when he woke up because he just didn't seem right and I know something is bothering him. I couldn't sooth him. I'm going to call his pedi as soon as I get off work. Ugh I wish I could just leave and be with my son! This breaks my heart.

  • 1ht...ped told us that the rotavirus vaccine contains a live virus and may lead to an upset stomach, diarreah, and extra gas.  DS's stomach has been a little upset since his shots on wed morning.  Gripe water seems to help.   she also told us to wash our hands really well after dirty diapers b/c we could catch the virus since we never received the vaccine.

Thank you for this! I didn't get that warning but it sounds like what is going on with my DS.

  • My lo just got his shots today and is really fussy.  I'm glad to know about the extra gas...pedi didn't mention that side effect!
  • I hope your baby feels better real soon.

  • Whenever my kids get their shots, they are fussy/needy/clingy and out of sorts for a few days.  Usually it passes after two or three days, but I think up to a week is pretty normal.

They've never had any of the severe reactions, but I think they just feel a little unwell for a while.  Hope he feels better soon!
