Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

stupid comment from cashier.

So I had to go to the grocery store today to get some things we needed & as much as it sucks taking both of them out, I just had to go. As we are checking out, the cashier asks how old DS is. I tell her & she proceeds to tell me about all the germs in stores & basically making me feel like I shouldnt be out with him. Sorry lady but we have to eat and that means me taking him to the store. Like Im not totally flustered by the whole situation anyway! ugh.

  • Ugh, people need to mind their own business! We took DD out all the time when she was first born & never had a problem with germs. It's not like you're passing him around the produce section for everyone to see or laying him down in the middle of the aisle! I've read a lot of places that the whole "staying in the house for 4 weeks or however long they said" is basically an OWT. If you take him out & leave him in his carrier & there aren't a bunch of people touching him & whatnot, he'll be just fine.

  • I had DD out at 5 days old. No biggie to me.
  • She's right- we should set up a quarantine station at your house just to be safe.....Wink

  • We stopped at the grocery store on our way home from the hospital. Had to get prescriptions plus both DH and I work there. As PP said as long as you weren't passing him arround he's not gonna catch any germs.

  • I think a good response would have been " I generally don't kids should be home alone until they are 2"

I took DD#1 to a resturant at 5 days b/c I stir crazy from being in the house.  I just didn't let any touch her.. or really get near her. One old lady told me that babies wern't supposed to leave the house until they were baptised, I told her we weren't having that done..so apparently my kids shouldn't ever leave the house.

  • After DS was born, we had to stop at Best Buy to get a new camera (DH decided that we needed a better one so we could take a few hundred each day Wink).  I felt fine enough to walk around and we just kept DS in his carrier.

I'm sorry the cashier made you feel bad.  I don't understand why everybody thinks it is okay to be a snatch about parenting advice.  If I don't ask you, I probably don't want your opinion!

  • I was told that I needed to bring DD to a yucky, germy doctor's office waiting room when she was three days old.  In comparison, the grocery store is practically sterile!
  • Knowing my, I would have said something like, "Then I thank you kindly for holding your breath until I am out of the store, in my car and more than half-way home."

  • How stupid.  That kind of stuff drives me nuts because I"m always speechless at the time and then thing of a thousand clever things to say over the next few days.
  • I had to take DD to a different STATE 4 hours away for a funeral when she was 5 days old.

You do what you have to do. Some people side-eyed me, but my DH needed me and we we both given the OK by the doctors so we went...

People need to mind their own business.

  • When I had my third I got plenty of comments like that.  I went home the same day she was born (born at 3 am and went home around 6 om).  My husband was deployed and I just wanted to be home to recover and have my girls with me.  I felt great after I had her.  She refused to drink from the bottles I had for her so the next day we packed up and went to get more.  I wasn't going to ask a friend to go to the store to find bottles when I was perfectly capable of doing so myself.  I went to the store on base so everyone knew everyone so of course people questioned when I had her.  Not only did the lady at Taco Bell there question me about being out with her she told me I shouldn't get the sauce on the quesadilla.  Even if I was BF that sauce wouldn't have hurt anything!
