Baby Names

If you LOVE a name just use it!

I have a love-hate-mostly-lurk relationship with this board. On one hand I love reading the posts about the really ridiculous names people choose and I lam a sucker for clicky polls. On the other hand, I get so over people obessing over whether or not they should use a name they love/like because it is or isn't popular. I actually am more over others on the board critizing other poster's name choices because they deem them as too popular.

Who cares? When your lo grows up and asks why you chose their name are you going to say "well I loved the name x but it was popular so I chose x"? That's a lame answer. If the name you pick doesn't have a special meaning to you then it should at least be the name you liked the best that most suited your lo. I don't understand why people would pass up a name they love or settle for anything less than that.

Apparently, all of us who say "I think it's too popular" care. That should have been self-explanatory. The rants about our unfairly expressed opinions are what's getting old. An opinion asked for is an opinion offered. This opinion of yours has been expressed before; I don't think it changed anyone's mind; it certainly didn't change the style of the board and I'm fairly certain your rant wont change anything either.

  • As someone who hates her uber popular name, I care alot about a name's popularity.  I also think it's ridiculous to name your child something just because you like it, without considering things like whether it will age well, whether your child will have to correct pronunciation or spelling or whether people will assume your child is either illiterate or the wrong gender.

I didn't say your, the collective your, opinions are unfairly expressed. My opinions on names are as valid/meanlingless as the next poster's.

But, just to make sure I'm on the same page with the style of this board popular opinions on the board are cool, popular names, not so much.

I can only assume that this whole rant came about, not, as you would have us believe, because you think the popularity of a name should not affect anyone's decision to use said name, but because your little girl's name is Harper, a name that has been mentioned at least three times this week, invariably with a question like (to paraphrase) "Is it too popular?" Not being a particular fan of the name, I didn't pay a great deal of attention to what the other posters said; but I'm sure, judging solely on your piqued temper, that the results were not in Harper's favor.

That said, there will always be "followers" on any public board; there are simply those people in the world that strive to fit in with others. I think if you pulled your head out of its bitter shroud long enough to really read, you'd find that the board regulars often disagree with one another, albeit in a congenial and good-natured manner. Dissent, and unpopular opinions are most certainly tolerated--unless you think it's acceptable to name a baby girl FitzGerald, in which case, I'm sorry but you must be banned (that was a joke, don't take it too literally).

It's obvious from your tone you're unhappy here, you're certainly unhappy with "us" as a whole. I would therefore suggest you stop reading our posts. Why allow yourself to be irritated each and every time you visit the Bump?

  • It's hard not to be snarky off the bat because we seem to get these once a week. I'm sure it makes the poster feel better, but don't expect much in the way of "I have a dream". I'm only responsible for me and my opinion. What others do is entirely up to them. And for some, a name's popularity ranks high in their decision making process. Heck we had one mentioned on here where keychains and payscale was the main concern. Was that one of my top three reasons? No, but popularity was, and it ate at me for months when my guy and I were deciding. Turns out we found a name we loved more. And if you're so keen on the story behind it, it will come out on the 31st on Appellation Mountain. Feel free to add your .02 to that website as well.

And people may settle because of a conflict of naming styles between themeselves and their significant other. One man's settle is another mans awesome. I'd like to recommend Name Berry where they are pretty much puppies and rainbows. Sometimes finding the board that fits with your style or your opinions helps.

Your FitzGerald comment cracked me up. I'll take a bit of snap if you can balance it with sarcastic humor.

I do read the Harper posts when I come across them for entertaiment value but it is not the the main motivator for my OP. It seems to be a name that is more polarizing on these boards then what I find IRL. But then again no one IRL would tell me they hated the name to my face. I won't know if DD enjoys her name for several more years but I hope she does.

My real name is Mary Elizabeth which is as traditional/classical/biblical and imo as boring as names get but have gone by an alias picked by my father since birth. My mom "loved" another name but was pressured by family to go with the tradtional family name. I wish she would have named me what she wanted to name me so that she wouldn't have those regrets now.

This board has a rubberneck traffic appeal to it so you will see me from time to time ;-)

This would have made a much better original post....now it just seems like you're taking your mom's naming decision out on this board.
