Babies: 0 - 3 Months

my baby farts ALL the time

This is the strangest question but my baby ALWAYS has gas. I mean, it's a 24 hour thing. He grunts constantly in his sleep and not the normal newborn cries. This is my 2nd baby so I know that these are different. He is constantly gassy and pushing farts out. I am breastfeeding him. I've stopped eating chocolate and that helps. But I'm about to try a trial day of just giving him formula to see if it's any better. This is ridiculous!

Re: my baby farts ALL the time

  • oh yeah, the question is, anyone else out there have a baby with bad gas like this and what are you doing about it?

  • LOL... my DS was the same way for a long time. I used to say he just takes after his daddy AND thank goodness he's a boy because I can't imagine those forceful toots coming out of a pink frilly dress. But, seriously, over the last 2-3 weeks, it has gotten so much better and now he just toots super loud a couple times a day, and he doesn't grunt in his sleep anymore except on rare occasions. I pump and supplement formula and noticed he was worse with the grunting after formula feeds, so I put a bit of gripe water in his bottle when he takes formula and that really seems to help! GL!
  • My nickname for DS is Toots McGoots.  He apparently takes after my BIL who farts all.the.time :)  Unless the gas is making your LO uncomfortable, I wouldn't worry.  IMO gas is only a problem when they're having trouble getting it out and it's upsetting them.

  • Babys digestive systems are not fully mature, gas is just one if the things to expect. Doesn't matter what you eat or don't eat. If he isn't in pain,i would leave it alone. You could help him work the gas if you wanted.

  • sadly he does seem to be in pain. he cries working it out and then gets scared when it comes out. i'll admit the last part is kind of funny to watch.
  • Have you tried to cut out dairy? My ds was like that and has a milk protein sensitivity. He would fart every 10 seconds for 3-5 hours. It was crazy!

  • If it doesn't seem like it hurts, I wouldn't do anything. But DD would scream when she's passing gas. I give her the Mylicon drops but that only helped a little. This won't help you since you BF, but DD's pedi told me to start putting cereal in with her formula. She may scream once a week now, nothing like it used to be. Also, one of the bumpies (I forgot who) told me to try bicycling her legs when she's in pain and that helps a lot!

  • DS let out 3 man-sized farts in his sleep last night, which caused him to wake up screaming. We recently switched to Dr. Brown's bottles and that took the edge off, so to speak. He still has extreme gas (compounded with reflux and colic), so it's a 24 hour screaming gas fest at our house. I hope he outgrows this soon.

  • My dd has gas all the time, and i give her the mylicon drops which helps a ton..
  • My DS has a lot of gas, mostly because he never burps!  I try to burp him for so long each time but no use.  He is breastfed and I know he swallows air and it does cause him some discomfort.  Trying the mylicon drops today.
  • I've been going through the same problem and this week has been the worst. Burp baby laying on his tummy across your knees and then bring him up and reburp. Also burp periodically throughout the day. Bicyle legs at each diaper change too. I am cutting dairy out to see if that helps also and it's day one right now. Today has been the first day all week that he has been more back to normal. The burping throughout the day seems to have made a big difference!

    GL!
