Belly Button Question PIP

My son's umbilical cord stump fell off yesterday AT his doctor's appointment. He was 2 weeks old yesterday. Anyways, the doctor went ahead and cauterized it. It looked a lot different than I thought it would. I see something that looks like a belly button but it has a lot of yellow puss looking stuff covering it. He said that was part of it? But today that yellow pus is coming off. It is getting on his clothes. I really just had no idea what this is supposed to look like when it came off.

What do you ladies think? Is this what it is supposed to look like? Thanks ladies!

Re: Belly Button Question PIP

  • Looks pretty normal to me.  I was a bit freaked out because DS's fell off within the first week and then looked really normal for a while, but then I started seeing dried blood in his perfect little belly button.  It was all normal.  Just keep it clean and it will look better each day.

  • LO had that and it had to be re-cauterized but the pedi said it was nothing to worry about.

Should I just keep cleaning it with alcohol?  I forgot to ask his pedi yesterday...I was caught up in the moment I guess! lol

I didn't have any alcohol handy and never bothered to buy any.  I just dabbed at it with a wet cloth, but yeah, that's what my doc suggested.

Ya, I was just thinking that it almost is like the part that was cauterized is the part that is coming off. Did he mean it was nothing to worry about as in it really didn't need to be re-cauterized or did he mean the fact that it looked like that was nothing to worry about?

I was just there yesterday but I will call to get it re-cauterized if I need to.

This!  I never had babies belly button cauterized!!! I used rubbing alchohol to keep it clean... It doesn't hurt LO but it is cold so my DD would flinch from the cold!

  • ours looked like that, pus and all. you're good to go.

Ok thanks! I was worried because it looks so gross, but I guess that is normal. I will just keep it clean!

  • Looks normal to me, we didn't use alcohol just water and fresh air to dry it before we dressed him.
  • Looks about right to me!  We didn't use alcohol either, just water.
