I'm not lucky enough to be a part of this board yet, but I love hearing stories from those with PCOS who have been successful...
I'm on my 2nd round of Clomid (100 mg.) and I will have an u/s tomorrow to see how I'm responding. It seems like so many PCOS women don't have success with Clomid. I'm wondering how Clomid affected you? Did you respond to it at all?
My RE says she doesn't want to put me on Metformin because there are no signs that I'm IR (even though I haven't been tested. I have lean PCOS, so I'm not sure if this makes a difference when it comes to IR) and because there is some controversy about how well it works. Did any of you get pg after taking Met? Or Met and Clomid?
Thanks so much for your help!
Re: PCOS ladies...
I got pregnant on my first cycle of Clomid (50 mg), Metformin and an Ovidrel trigger shot.
The ultrasound showed 2 follicles and once my doc was satisfied with the size of them, she gave me an Ovidrel shot and we had sex that night and I believe the next 2 nights.
I hope that helps! Good luck!
EDIT: I also like to point out that I was on Metformin for about a year before we TTC to help regulate me. I went from having a period 2-3 times a year to having one every 2-3 months, which isn't amazing but a tad better.

I only O'd with 1 round of clomid (out of 6) and it wasn't the cycle we got pg.
I was on Met for 11mos before we got pg, and even after having the twins I am still on it. I honestly feel better on it and it is MUCH easier for me to maintain a healthy weight.
FWIW - we got pg with injections, trigger and IUI - on our 6th IUI. Well worth the wait though - hang in there
I did not ovulate while on clomid. AND, I had HORRIBLE side effects with it. So, rather than continuing to up my doses, they switched me to Femara. First cycle on the lower dose I did not ovulate. Second cycle on the higher dose I did ovulate. Stayed on femara...did one cycle with a trigger shot, TI, and did not get pregnant...4th round I did femara plus IUI and got pregnant.
No met for me as I am not IR.
Good luck!
clomid did not work for me.
We ended up going the IVF route after numerous IUI / clomid, injectible failures, including using Met.
Good luck, I hope it works!
My RE took me off Metformin because I wasn't IR, but he tested me for it first to make sure.
One of my friends is thin, has PCOS, and is IR, so it is possible.
I did not respond to Clomid. I only took one round because it also made me bleed. I didn't respond to Femara. I wound up getting pregnant on my first round of Femara + Follistim (injectable) + Ovidrel (trigger shot) + IUI (we had some MFI issues too.)
I respond SO well to clomid we added it to my IVF cycles!
works for me very well and I am always on Met, have been since my PCOS dx. There is some evidence that Met works on even thin PCOSers who are not IR. To oversimplify why, PCOS is an endocrine disorder where one's hormones are out of balance. Met works to balance those hormones, not just insulin, ALL hormones.
There is NO controversy that I have ever seen that says Met does not work. The only study that isn't entirely pro-met is the one that says the Met/Clomid combo works better than either one alone. Where is your Dr getting this info from? I would ask her for articles showing there is controversy about the success rates shown in blood work for people with PCOS. if she is referring to Thin PCOSers, there are studies currently out there being compiled (my old RE was a researcher, lol)
I have PCOS and Clomid did nothing for me. I had luck with IVF.
Met was given to me even though I wasn't IR.

I also did not respond to clomid - at all. I tried alternative medicine (accupuncture and herbs), but the PCOS was too nasty. I never took metformin. What finally did help me what the ovarian drilling procedure, which doesn't seem to be too popular in the US, but I ovulated 14 days later for the first.time.ever. and was pregnant the next cycle.
Good Luck!
We did 6 rounds of clomid and I never responded. I'm not IR either.
We ended up going straight to IVF and took 2 cycles to get our boys.
My summary...
Round 1: Started Met, currently on 1500mg/day. Did 5 days on 50mg Clomid, no response, 5 days on 100mg Clomid, follies grew, Ovidrel, TI, Endometrin, BFN
Round 2: 5 Days on 100mg Clomid, no response, 5 days on 100 mg Clomid, follies grew, Ovidrel, TI, Endometrin, BFN
VACATION!!!
Round 3: 5 Days on 100 mg Clomid, no response, 10 days on injectables, Trigger, IUI plus lots of BD, BFP
In addition to everything else I was doing, I also started acupuncture, taking Yoga for fertility, and we saw a fertility nutritionist who specialized in PCOS. I think it was a combination of the Eastern & Western medicine that got us to this point.
Good luck to you and if you can with your insurance, I would highly recommend exploring your options. I was not IR, nor was I lean, but my Dr.put me on Met anyway b/c she said that it works. Even if you're lean and not IR, your insulin may not be working to it's full capacity and she said that puts a wrench in everything.
I got PG after being put on Met and losing 30lbs. The day I was supposed to pick up the Clomid I took a test just to make sure, and it was BFP!
good luck
