How do you make applesauce?

I am pretty bad in the kitchen but we went apple picking this weekend and I need to do something with all these apples. I have heard applesauce is pretty easy...so how do you make yours? TIA!

Re: How do you make applesauce?

  • I just made some! I had like 9 HoneyCrisp (tart & slightly sweet) apples left over. So you just peel & core & roughly chop, place in a large soup pot.  I added about 1 cup water, 1/3 cup sugar (d/t my apples being tart, if they are sweet, don't add any) & 1/4 t cinnamon (or to taste).  Bring to a boil, then cover & simmer for like 10-20 minutes until apples are tender (you can't overcook an apple for applesauce!).  Unconver & cool.  Place in blender/food processer for smoother applesauce or mash with potato masher for chunckier style.

  • You just peel and core the apples (I leave the good part in big chunks) then you simmer it on the stove in a big pot with just a little water (maybe a couple of inches). You can add cinnamon and sugar to taste. Then you mush it up with a potato masher or something. I have only made it once, but it turned out pretty good.

  • Peel and core apples.  Slice into chunks.  Cook in crock pot on high for about 3 hours.  Mash with a potato masher.  Add cinnamon to taste.
  • I used a food mill...I got mine from Target

I quartered and cored a bunch of apples...I never peel mine.  Put in a big pot with about a 1/4-1/2 inch of water in the bottomof the pot...cover and simmer until apples are tender.  Then put them in the food mill.  Add sugar & cinnamon to taste.  I prefer Macs for applesauce.

  • It is so easy!! We grew up in apple country, so I always make a ton of it every fall so we always have homemade applesauce in the freezer and I never have to buy the jarred kind! ?

I usually use either cortlands or macs and peel, core and slice them until I fill my 2 biggest pots on the stove. ?Toss them in with cinnamon and sugar over medium heat and let it cook down stirring occasionally. ? No need to add water as the apples make their own. ?After it gets all mushy I let it cool?separate?into freezer containers and freeze!! ?So simple and so yummy!!

  • A food mill is fantastic because you don't have to bother peeling or coring the apples- just quarter them, toss them in a pan with a *tiny* bit of water and cinnamon to taste. When they're soft run them through the food mill- it will leave a smooth pureed applesauce and remove all of the seeds, skins and cores.

Crockpot is also easy but you have to peel and core the apples first. Then put into the crockpot with a scant amount of water (like no more than 1/4 cup at first) and cinnamon. Cook until soft, then you can mash with a potato masher if you want a chunkier sauce, or puree in a food processor/use an immersion blender for a smooth sauce.

I never actually add sugar- just chose sweet apples to begin with and it isn't needed at all.
