a vent about children's clothes

I am BEYOND frustrated because Henry has outgrown most of his summer clothes and I can't find any more on the racks. All fall and winter stuff out. HELLO, PEOPLE, babies outgrow clothes. I cannot see into the future and know when my child is going to need to go up a size in clothes, and he is an 11-month old currently wearing size 24 months so I clearly can't buy ahead. What exactly is my baby supposed to wear for the next two months of summer???? He starts MDO in a month and he's going to have nothing to wear.

If they want to put sweaters out in July for adults, fine...but babies/children outgrow their clothes way too unpredictably for that.

I'm irritated.

I'm new to the kids clothes arena, but I couldn't agree more. I mean, I have no idea what size he is going to be when and it's not like he needs to think through his fall/winter wardrobe in advance so he can be on trend. ;) UGH.

  • Completely agree with you. I could not find long sleeved onesies in march. Ended up getting clothes from a friend with a baby 7 months older.
    siggy should be here!
  • i mostly shop at the outlets...so they do seem to have the current season for cheap! haha.. Audrey is changing sizes right now too...and im getting great deals (but not the best choices, i guess)

  • DH drove all over looking for sunglasses for Kira this week.  The ones we were using were left behind at the baseball game in my siggy, so she needs new ones.  All but one place said they don't have any because they now have back to school stuff, and the one place that had them had only ugly ones but we had to buy a couple of those. ;)  We returned to NC on July 17th and they were all gone?  July 17th?  It'll still be sunny for months...and the sun shines in cold months too!!!

So yeah, Kira is small so we don't have the outgrowing issue that you do, but YES, it's crazy how they are so far ahead in what they have in stock. :(  However, we may face that issue with this little one since we don't know how big she's going to be and I learned the hard way not to buy ahead for newborns...by January they'll probably have just spring stuff!

I hope you can find something!  Good luck!

Do you have any consignment stores in your area?  We have some and they seem to still have some summer stuff.  Not to mention they probably have a good discount on them now too. :-)

  • Just a couple weeks ago I was looking for a sunhat for DS and couldn't find any.  Likewise for a rashguard shirt.  They were on clearance everywhere, so of course they only had tiny infant sizes.  It had only been warm enough here for either for about a week!

Same goes for maternity clothes.  You need the season you're currently in, not the next one!

I have honestly always thought they should keep an off-season section at all times.  Sometimes you need a new coat at the end (or middle!) of winter or a new swimsuit at the end (or middle!) of summer.  It's ridiculous that they expect you to buy these things in advance.  And around here, you need long sleeves for 10 months out of the year, so it makes no sense that it's only on the racks for six.

I agree - children's sizing is annoying.  I'm mostly an on-line shopper, and if it's any consolation, there seem to be a lot of summer clothes on clearance now.  So far, I've looked at Tea Collection and Children's Place.  Maybe try a consignment/thrift store?

  • I know EXACTLY how you feel!  G is a little older than Henry but is also in 18-24 month old clothes and seems to keep growing.  We still have  a lot of warm weather to go. so today when we realized a pair of 18 month shorts (from Target-- never again!) were not going to make it passed today ( most of her height is in her body, bottoms usually last a little longer)I told DH that I would go to Carters but he told me I shouldn't since it's almost August....but I'm so scared she will keep growing and we are going to be screwed if we have a warm September and October.  I get what he is saying since I've already spent so much on clothes for this summer.  I bought 12 month stuff in April, 18 month stuff in the beginning of June and 24 month stuff 3 weeks ago.  It's crazy.
