Babies: 3 - 6 Months

? about cereal

So I am skipping cereal for DS so I am sorta clueless about this but when is it recommended to start giving cereal by spoon? On FB a girl I know just posted pictures of her barely 3 month old getting cereal by spoon. I thought it was recommended at 4 months? I'm not asking so I can say anything to her just curious. TIA

  • My pedi said 4 months, which is when we started. But, DS really didn't get the concept until just last week. So, I don't know if it was 2 months of practice or he really wasn't ready yet.

  • Anywhere from 4 to 6 months. Most people are encourage to go by their dr's recommendations and their own feelings on when they think their LO is ready.

Our dr gave us the green light at 4 months, but we didn't start until a couple of weeks later. By then DD was very ready.

  • Yah in the comments she said her head was bobbing all over the place so it made a mess. I just thought one of the signs of being ready was holding their head up well...

  • I keep wondering what people mean by "when they are ready"? What cues should we look for to know if they are ready?

btw - I am aimimg to introduce foods at 6 months but I am curious

My pedi said some cues are good head/neck control, good eating habits - possibly wanting more than 35-40 oz of bm or f at 4 months of age, watching others put food in their mouths, and making sucking motions on the spoon while they learn as opposed to you pouring it in their mouth.

We are starting soon w/LO since he is 4 months old and showing these signs.

  • Arabella has always had good neck control. She has a very strong neck. But her pedi still recommended 5 months, and said I could try a few weeks before if she seemed ready. It was more about 1. her stomach being able to handle it, and 2. Her interest in starting solids. I tried at 4 1/2 months and it messed with her sleep, she was crying more and her pedi said it was probably giving her a tummy ache. So I stopped and tried again at 5 months. The 2 weeks between the attempts made all the difference. She took it great without any problems! the point of cereal is to introduce textures and a spoon. There is no nutritional value to cereal. She always watches when I eat and now she even opens her mouth when she see's me take a bite. That's how I knew she was completely ready.

ETA: IMO 3 months is young. Baby still needs Formula or BM 100% of the time.
